They ask how many are in the room and scan one of your MagicBands and your info comes up.

How do they know if your a resort guest or not?

You have to link both your ticket and your resort stay to your MDE (My Disney Experience) account. If your MDE account shows you have both a valid ticket and a resort reservation for that day, you should be set. If you are using a magic band, that should be showing in MDE also.
