Hi everyone!

Ok, so I have done some past WDW trip reports on mouseplanet.com, and I have been a member of disboards.com for awhile now, so I decided to simultaneously post my most recent trip report (December of 2009) on both mouseplanet.com AND disboards.com!

The players of this trip:

ME: 29 years old, works in film production, loves all things DISNEY!
MOM: 57 years old, obsessed with Scottish Terriers, pretty good at landscaping, also loves all things DISNEY!!
DAD: 58 years old, also works in film production, also loves all things DISNEY!!!

That’s us in a nutshell. I have no siblings. We live on some acreage on the rural Oregon mountainside with horses and cats and dogs, surrounded by cows and sheep and deer. Here are a couple of pictures:

I encourage anyone interested to visit the mouseplanet TR for this same trip if you want to read pre-trip info, because I started that thread before we left (I think in August of 2009). The link is below.

I enjoy writing these and am glad to finally be getting around to this one, and I hope you'll join me for the ride!

DAY ONE – 12/6

FOR PRE TRIP STUFF, PLEASE VISIT MY MOUSEPLANET TR USING THE LINK BELOW. :)

On December 6th, my folks and I flew with one stop from Portland, Oregon to Orlando, FL. It takes over 9 hours to get from one end of the country to the other (and that's flyin with the wind), so even though we didn't get to MCO until like 6 PM, we still have to leave around 9 AM which meant leaving the house around 6 AM which meant getting up at around 4 AM. Ugh.

Even though I still feel uncomfortable flying, we arrived safe and sound and MCO on time. I had been aware for the last couple of months that our yellow stickers for the Magical Express never arrived, and I was hoping that this wouldn’t cause an issue. I was wrong.

It wasn’t too bad, but since we didn’t have the stickers, we couldn’t just say good bye to our bags in Portland and see them again in our hotel room. We had to go fetch them from the carousel and bring them with us to the ME check in area.

AND THEN we arrive at the ME check in area and it occurs to me that we don’t have (er, never had mailed to us) the rest of the ME packet and so instead of doing our usual walk through to the Boardwalk line, I had to deal with a semi cranky cast member while hauling my heavy suitcase, and running on not a lot of food and not a lot of sleep. I chuckle at my notes now because it looks like I was really grumpy about it (I kept a little log on my laptop and I was NOT happy when I wrote about this), but in retrospect it really wasn’t so bad. As I recall, we were able to board the bus right away and be off to our home away from home.

I am planning to doing LOTS of pictures for this particular trip report (unlike my last two which were mostly all text), but it doesn’t look like I took any this day! Either I was really crabby or really tired (and after like 9 hours on a plane who wouldn’t be?) so no pictures until tomorrow.

I didn’t specifically in my notes comment on the nice sunset, so while I don’t have a picture to prove it, it clearly made an impression on me. It also says in my notes that originally we were going to try for the MVMCP that night, but fortunately we did not get tickets because it didn’t end up in the cards. Instead, we arrived at the Boardwalk around about 7 PM and were led up to the club level desk to check in. Ahh… I remember the Disney magic started to sink in. We were home!

We scored a boardwalk view on the end (i.e. hallway to one side so no balconies) which was very cool. We spend a few moments relaxing and checking out our balcony and then decided to head to the Hollywood Studios, which happened to be doing extra magic hours until 11 PM. Whoo hoo!

I can almost guarantee we stopped at the inn keepers club for deserts and coffee (it would be around that time) before heading down to the boat for HS. I can’t believe I didn’t take pictures of any of this, but my camera doesn’t lie. The photos are in chronological order, and there is one with a date of March 28th (of our Scotties dogs at the beach), and then the next photo is my dad and I at Animal Kingdom on December 7th, so I have no photographic evidence of this day. Oh well.

According to my notes, at least, we first went to check out the Osborne Lights (I do specifically recall waiting the lights dance to “Christmas in Sarajevo” by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, who I think is a very cool band and who I got to see in concert twice. I have a signed CD by them as well – Beethoven’s Last Night. Did you know that the lead guitarist Al Pitrelli used to play for Megadeath?) Anyways… after the lights we (i.e. my mom and myself because my dad is a stick in the mud) rode Rock N Roller Coaster (LOVE this ride), and then we all walked on to the Great Movie Ride, then did Toy Story Mania through the stand-by entrance with only a 20 minute wait (gotta love EMH), then decided to head back to the room. Actually, now that I type this I recall that we actually HAD to go back to the room because it was just after 11 PM and the park was closing.

We get back to our room around midnight and before we can all drift off to what would have been a blissful vacation slumber, we are greeted with news from our farm-sitter via a phone message that the water pipes are frozen!

Just a brief background – I live with my folks on some acreage in a rural mountainside of Oregon, and we keep some horses and our dogs and a number of cats (who sometimes have it better then I do with their own private room and fancy feast wet food), and our water comes from our own well and our sewage goes into our own septic and our power is drawn from our own windmill (no, not that last part, hee hee), but we DID JUST get high speed internet a few months ago via satellite, believe it or not. Nope, DSL, fiber optics, or even CABLE TELEVISION doesn’t come out to where we live. Everything we get comes from satellite. I have no cell service at home, either. Ugh.

Anyways – so our farm-sitter calls (remember its only 9 PM her time) to tell us that the hose in the barn is frozen over and she doesn’t want the pipes to burst (we have some excitement regarding this later in the week), so for the time being she is going to have to haul the buckets down to the bathtub in the house to fill them up and then drive them back out to the barn. In the mud. And it’s raining. But she assures us everything will be fine. Ugh.

Fortunately, everything (for the most part) was OK and she’s farm-sat before she there wasn’t any HUGE stresses, but it was a little bit of a wrench. For some reason, during the week we were gone there was an incredibly unusual DEEP FREEZE in the either state of Oregon which damaged crops, power lines and water pipes everywhere… but more on that later.

Next up – Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom, and PICTURES!

NEXT DISNEY TRIP - DECEMBER 2nd - 11th 2010 - Boardwalk Inn club level

DAY TWO 12/7

Back at home my entire family rises between 5 – 6 AM, but hey we’re on vacation and we had some semi-stressful news the night before and so today we didn’t get up until 7 AM.

Breakfast was (and this became a theme for us) at the Inn Keeper’s Club. Cereal and fruit and little pastries and even eggs and bacon and oatmeal, along with juices and milk and coffee… ah, I love club level. After finishing our breakfast and getting some coffee to go (another theme for us), we went to the bus stop and caught one to Animal Kingdom.

We arrived at Animal Kingdom at 9:00 AM, and my dad and I posed in front of the tree out front. I sure do like going to Disney during the holiday time.

My parents both really enjoy Kilimanjaro Safari (and so do I to a slightly less crazed extent), so that’s the first ride we went on - now, I am revealing to all you readers that the early part of December is a great time to go because we hardly ever had to wait for anything the entire trip, but this doesn’t mean that now ya’ll get to tell all your friends who go and tell their friends and suddenly early December is packed.

Anyways, case in point – we walked right onto the ride and were off. It is true that going in the morning (especially on a milder day) renders lots of animals, and I think I got some good pictures.

After the safari my dad was getting hungry, so even though it was only 11 AM we decided to give Yak and Yeti a try. It was actually early enough that they weren’t open yet so we go on a list (first one’s actually!) to be seated once they opened. It’s funny cause I remember that when we first got there, we were the only ones, but then we went off in a shady spot and when we came back there was this huge crowd of hungry people ALSO waiting in line to get in. I guess we’re not the only ones with grumbly tummies at 11:30 AM. While we were in our shady spot we took some pictures:

We were seated in the upstairs room next to a window. The view was nice, and I have always appreciated how Disney puts little details into everything. I seem to recall our server wasn’t that great, but the food was good. My dad had the Kobe beef burger, my mom had the prawns, and I had the chicken. It was all yummy… but for some reason I seem to be thinking that we thought at the time it was a little high priced. Hmm. But it looks like we had a good time nonetheless:

After lunch we decided do to the jungle trek, because wet blanket parents couldn’t handle Expedition Everest just yet. In fact, according to my notes we skipped Everest this day. Hmm… there might have been a line. A should rephrase my earlier statement – it’s not that there is no one at Disney in early December, it’s that my family has a rule that if there’s a line for a ride we pass it up and try again later, and for some reason that almost always works for us. I know I did EE later in the vacation a couple of times with no wait. So anyway, we walked through the jungle, and got some fun pictures:

After our jungle trek we headed over to DinoLand and walked right on to Dinosaur – and I mean literally walked right in through the queue area and into the pre-show with hardly anyone else in there. It was great. After Dinosaur I convinced my mom to ride Primeval Whirl with me (my dad doesn’t like to spin so he sat this one out). My mom and I, on the other hand, love to spin and this ride and the teacups always make us laugh like little girls. Ironically, however, I can not STAND mission space red and my mom just loves it. Go figure.

It was about 3 PM at this point so we went back to the Boardwalk for a little mid-day break during which I cat napped and my dad took a shower and we got a message from our farm-sitter that the barn pipes were still frozen (it was only 30 degrees at home, which I know for some folks is nothing but for Oregon that’s kind of unusual). At about 5:15 PM we went to Kouzzina (I’m pretty sure I made an ADR for this because my mom loves Cat Cora), and we had the sampler appetizer (yummy), and my folks each had a lamb shank (the reviews were “good”, “nothing special”, and “beans are yummy”) and I had the lamb burger (which I reviewed as being “spicier then I expected but good”). Here’s a picture of the boardwalk from that day:

Unfortunately I have no more pictures from this day, but I do have notes. We caught a bus around 6:30 PM to Magic Kingdom for extra magic hour. We arrived shortly before Wishes and caught an area near the middle hub with a pretty good view of the castle. I do have in my notes that there were large crowds for these fireworks, and also that it was foggy. That coupled with wind blowing in our direction made the fireworks hard to see and the whole experience less than it can be, but we had some pretty cool Wishes experiences later in the trip so no big deal.

I was mostly psyched about the empty rides I knew I could pretty much count on being empty once the families with small children started filing out. And as expected, after the fireworks quiet a few bodies head towards main street so we swam upstream into Tomorrowland. We decided first to do the Laugh Floor, which I remember being cute and funny, and then after that got some fast passes for Space Mountain and caught the people mover for a few minutes of relaxation. Going through SM while riding the TTA I noticed that there were no longer any flying cookies on the ceiling and commented to my mom that that must have been part of the ride upgrades (some of you may recall that SM was closed for several months and reopened just prior to our visit).

After TTA my dad insisted that we ride Carousel of Progress (yawn), so we along with maybe 4 other people piled into the seats and sat down to enjoy the ride. About half way into it the ride broke down during one of the spins to the next scene, so one half of the stage was the 20s and the other half was the 50s. The ride operator even had to come over the speakers to tell everyone to stay in their seats (I’m curious as to if someone getting out of their seat while the ride was moving is what caused the breakdown). Well this sort of spazzed the rest of the ride because it seemed all confused and turned correctly the rest of the time, but always with the partition in the middle, so the left half of the stage was the previous scene and the right half was the new scene. Finally for the last scene, it ran twice and during the second time the seats moved REALLY SLOWLY so that once the scene ended, the entire stage was only on the one scene. It was sort of an odd experience, but at least it added a little spice to one of the more boring (for me) rides.

After that is was time for our space mountain FPs. Very cool updates. After that we decided to head towards fantasyland to get some ice cream and then sat down on a bench near the horse carousel and watched and Chip & Dale and Goofy all played/interacted with some kids. This was obviously where all the characters were and there weren’t a lot of people around so it was fun to see what the characters would do. Then we got to see, like clockwork, the currently characters go back into the backstage area and then a few minutes later emerge again looking just ever so slightly different.

It was getting on to be 11 PM and I could tell we were all tired, so we chose to walk through the castle and browse through main street shops as we drifted towards the exit. We caught a bus back to the Boardwalk and was back in the room by 11:45 PM during which I rode my trip notes for the day. After that, it was bedtime.

Next up: EPCOT, MK and EPCOT.
