Early Birthday Gift?

DS will turn 11 on Feb. 28. We will be driving from MA to FL (we do this every year!) on Feb. 15 and returning Feb. 26. For his gift this year I'm thinking of either a portable DVD player or an MP3 player. So, my question is: should I give him his gift early (before the trip) so he can use it on the long car ride to and from FL? It means he probably won't have much to open on his actual b-day, but at age 11 he's old enough to understand. What would you do??

give it to him a few days before you leave so he can learn to use it and load it up with tunes.

I would DEFINITELY give it to him the day you leave - not a few days before kids these days don't need to figure out how things work---I think they're BORN knowing! besides if he has to fiddle with it that will take up a little time of the ride.

I WOULD have something to open on his b'day though. There's nothing like the day going by & getting absolutely nothing. HOpe this helps... Don't forget extra batteries....tons of batteries - more than you think you'll need. IN my mil dvd player the car adapter doesn't fit (weird I know!) so you might want to check that out when you buy it.

well - if you give the kid a mp3 player the day you leave...it takes time to charge up...and add songs to it...even if you know how to use it.

no fun to have a brand new mp3 player and no way to get music on it if you're stuck in a car on a long drive away from your computer.

unless the OP's kid has all his music on a laptop that it's bringing with him

Very nice to give it to him early to use for your trip! As a mom of a ds10, I'm sure he'll understand and appreciate it.

give it to him early. My kids are getting seaworld tickets for easter and luggage early for their birthdays for a June florida trip
