hi everyone -- my dh and i are scared to take our almost 5 year old to disney in late nov. we took him to six flags for a "test run" and during the bugs bunny show he was scared to death. sat there with his hands over his ears. i hate for him to miss out on the shows and fireworks due to loud noise. we were thinking of ordering him some sort of ear plugs. has anyone tried this or have a brand u can recommend? thanks!

I can't remember the name of the ones (maybe Mack) we used in december but they sell them at Walgreens they are made for kids. They worked really well for both our dd6 and dd9 they are both bothered by the noise of fireworks.

thanks for the response -- just curious if anyone tried them for their children at the shows -- also we will have 7 month old -- do they make any kind for babies? im worried he will be scared half to death during fireworks and shows??? thanks!

We've used the Earplanes brand...those foam ones that you squish to fit. Mykids have used them when we go to the jet car races-the kids loves the races, but they can't take the extreme noise.

We tried the soft squishy ones on our trip last fall (DS-then-7 cannot tolerate very loud noises). They didn't work very well for us. We had a hard time keeping them in, and even when they were they didn't seem to help him with the noise.

Next time, we'll try the silicon plugs you can use for swimmers ear. He had that this summer and he had to use those plugs for swim team practice. They stayed in very well, and when we watched the fireworks on the 4th of July he didn't mind the noise.

CAUTION: we learned the hard way that they stick horribly to hair, since my DD also used them at the fireworks. It was like having chewing gum in her hair and we had to use baby oil when we got home to get it out. Ponytails are the way to go for anyone who doesn't have really short hair.

My DS 3 has really sensative hearing. Try ear muffs (not the winter kind) the kind parents use a stock car racing or monster truck rallies. The vaccuum even bothered my son. The ear muffs work great. He will even vaccuum now. Whenever we are outside and it is too loud with a weed wacker or lawn mower. He asks for them. He puts them on and is fine. Never tried ear plugs, but I can't imagine that he would keep them in his ears.

We use the Mack silicone earplugs. They come about 8-12 to a box but my younger son who has very small ear canals uses only 1 piece between both ears. I split one in half, put each half in a contact lens case (the kids that you screw on the tops) to keep them soft and pliable and before any loud shows or fireworks, take the piece out, roll it in my fingers and then squish it into his ear. It doesn't go far into the canal but it will spread over the entire opening to block/muffle the sound. As he's aged, he's gotten better, but I always have then on hand when needed.
