I've gotten many great recipes from this forum -- and now it's my turn to share one with you.
I grew up near Woonsocket, RI -- a city highly populated by French Canadians, my relatives being some of them. I don't know the origin of this recipe (Canadian or not), but it seems if you weren't from the area, you've never heard of it. And if you are from the area, you are VERY familiar with it. It's at every fund raiser, pot luck, fesitval......
It's not hot at all -- so don't know how it got it's name. It's like a sloppy joe, but much different. Give it a try. This was my mom's version - but everyone's is pretty similiar.
I make this size batch, then freeze any extra for later. This makes enough for about 8-10 sandwiches.
DYNAMITES
Serve in long torpedo rolls (like an oversized hot dog bun) sliced lengthwise only HALF way thru. We like potato chips with it. Some people also put a slice of cheese in their roll.
2 green peppers -- cut into 1/4" strips
1 large onion (I like a sweet onion) -- cut into 1/4" strips
2 stalks celery -- chopped
4 garlic -- chopped (I use the stuff in the jar!)
In large pot, saute above in oil until translucent, but do not brown. Season with salt & pepper.
Add:
2 lbs hamburg -- already browned & drained
2 tsp vinegar
8oz can of tomato sauce (SAVE THE CAN FOR NEXT INGREDIENT)
1/2 CAN of water
6oz can of tomato paste
14.5oz can diced tomatos (like DelMonte Fresh Cut diced tomato with garlic & onion)
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp oregano
1 pinch red pepper
Cover & simmer for 1 hour.
Hope you like it!!! It's still a favorite at our house.
