DxDP and side dishes

I've been on a big Disney Food kick in prep for our trip in November and was not able to find anywhere this is explained -

We're on the DxDP and a few of the restaurants we have ADRs at have the meal but also additional side dishes that can be ordered. If we wanted some of them would we need to pay out of pocket if we ordered them?

I do realize we get a lot of food on the DxDP but most of the sides would be split between at least 2 adults if not all 3 of us.

Separate side dishes are not included in any dining plan, so yes, you'd have to pay for them if you order them.

Included sides would be the ones served with an entree, such as a steak served with potatoes or a burger served with french fries.

What you can do is ask for a replacement side, if you dont like what comes with the meal. I did that at LeCellier....I didnt want the risotta with my fillet so I asked for the cream cheese mashed potatoes instead and they were more than willing to accomadate us

Le Cellier will allow you to substitute your included side for another side that comes with a different entree (as long as you are not ordering from the special fixed price menu, no substitutions at all are allowed with that)...they won't let you substitute your included side for one of the separately listed and sold sides.

I read in a trip report that a side dish was included if you are on the deluxe plan and eat at Artist Point (a signature).

Is this true?
I thought it was odd when I read the report, but saw it in the photos and they said it was included with their meal.

I don't know the absolute correct answer and I do believe some of these "gery areas" with dining plans depends upon your server...you may be able to subsittude one of the additonal sides for an appetizer. In one restaurant a server may allow the additonal side for no extra cost while at another you will have to pay...

Last year we were on DxDP and DS was under 3 so we didn't pay for him and he was sharing. We went to Norway for dinner and I fully expected to share with him (I wasn't going to pay $30 to order him a hot dog kids dish where sometimes I did order a kids meal for DS and paid OP for it). Anyway, the server insisted my son can have the hot dog platter, and I told him he was under 3 and wasn't on the dining plan and the server still said no problem it was OK and my son got a kids hot dog meal at Norway and we weren't charged and he wasn't on the plan. As far as I know I should have paid for the meal for him but the server said no.

So sometimes I think the grey areas are just that and it may depend on the mood of your server or whatever that evening. But I am always prepared to pay OP for anything I order that I know is not specifically listed on the DP or DXDP and at times am plesantly surprised when I am not....

There have been some reports of people being able to sub in a "side dish" for an entree's side (I recall one story about getting the mushrooms at the Yachtsman specifically), but I'd file it under the "it doesn't hurt to ask, but don't plan on it being allowed" label.

What I'd really like to know is whether or not you could sub in one of those sides for your appetizer on the DxDP. I had never thought of it that way before, but for some reason this question made my consider it -- especially since I have a recently-discovered shellfish allergy that cuts the appetizers menu way down in a lot of places...
