The kids are dying for a pet. We're thinking something small (they've already said they do not want fish again ;) ). I'm not big into hamsters or guinea pigs.

DH's coworker recommended a dwarf bunny. He has one and said it's a nice pet. Anyone out there have one (or more?). Are they okay with children? Can you leave them in a rabbit hutch outside for the winter, or do we need to make a space in the house? Any info you could give me would be greatly appreciated, I don't want to enter this blindly.

One more thing, DD#1 is allergic to cats (we think). Would this pose a problem for her?

Thank you!!

If your DH'S coworker has one, I would write down all the questions you have asked here, and have your DH ask his coworker.

we have two lop bunnies and the kids love them. I have had a dwarf lop in the past, and they do stay pretty small....2-2 1/2 pounds.

You can keep them in an outdoor hutch all winter as long as they are sheltered from the harshes conditions. Our rabbits are working on becoming housebroken....so that is an option too if you do want a bunny in the house.

Good luck!

DD had a Netherland's Dwarf about 10 years ago. It was really cute, but it lived in the garage of DD's friend. It didn't live very long:( Not sure if it died from exposure to the elements, or other issues. DD got a lop-eared rabbit about 8 years ago which lived in a cage in her room here at home, and still lives in a cage at DD's place in Florida. If the cage is in a small area(like a bedroom) you would want to clean the cage at least a couple of times a week. DD would only clean it once per week or so, and there was major stank:eek: However, DD kept her door closed ALL the time so the rest of us didn't have to deal with it.

My dwarf bunny is about 7 years old. It lives outside in a hutch, and grows a thick coat for the winter.

My dad is allergic to everything, and I just HAD to have a pet when I was younger :)

She does fine outside, and is a tiny little thing. Netherland dwarf, very cute. Never once bit me or was harsh. You have to get their nails clipped though, those things can be sharp!

Any other questions??? :)

They are adorable and so loveable! I had two, both males. They lived inside. Most of the time they stayed in their cages, which were in the house. But they did have their free time to run around the house. Raul was even leash trained. You should have seen the looks when we took him walking.

I could not believe how strong their personalities were. One, Raul, was very possessive of me. He didn't like my husband being around me at all. He would stand up on his hind legs and hiss and claw at my hubby's feet. If I put Raul up on the bed for play time he would pee on my side of the bed to mark his territory and leave little pellets on Junior's side of the bed. But he was very loving. He loved to go camping with us.

Robert, on the other hand, was so laid back. He didn't have a care in the world. We just couldn't let him and Raul play together because he thought Raul was a girl.

But we were moving and they wouldn't have had as much room to play and such so they have moved on to a much happier place (for Robert at least). They are now making more bunnies.

Have you thought about Bearded Dragons? I've heard they are great pets too.
