Evening all!

DW has an ongoing tooth problem - currently awaiting a referral appointment to have some work done (root canal, possible abscess treatment) under anaesthetic (sp?), but in the mean time the pain is getting worse!

Besides the regular doses of Ibuprofen and Co-Dydramol and regular mouth washing with hot salty water, anyone got any suggestions what can be done to relieve the pain? Tonight seems to be a particularly bad night! :headache:

Ive always use tooth tinture, got it from boots and it works wonders, it might also be known as Oil Of Cloves I think.

Hope that helps:goodvibes

Poor soul - toothache is the most miserable thing. I'm not sure whether or not this would work, but maybe she could try a mouthwash of soluble aspirin. I always find that's the best thing for a sore throat, so maybe some localised pain relief would work for toothache, too. You might want to check that it's okay to take aspirin and ibuprofen together.

Veganin - recommended by my dentist when I had an infection under my crown and could barely open my mouth. It really took the edge of the pain but I don't know what it contains or how it would react with her other pain killers.

Oil of clove was wonderful - you're not meant to let it touch the skin/gums but I was in so much pain anyway I put it straight on the gum and that helped too.

I hope she feels better soon, it is so miserable to have a painful mouth. Sending her a hug :grouphug:

Thanks guys - i'll be popping to boots tomorrow i think!

Thanks for the suggestion Debs, sadly Ibuprofen and Aspirin don't mix as they share similar pain-relieving chemicals. Might look into using soluble co-cocodomol as an alternative though, so the thought helps a lot :thumbsup2

This helped me last year when i had the worst toothache i had ever had:grouphug:

Forgot to add that a hot water bottle against my jaw helped too.

My mum always swears by whiskey on the gum ;)

Hope she gets some relief soon :)

Another thing which occurs to me is that when younger dd used to suffer with chronic tonsillitis, the doctor always prescribed a mix of ibuprofen and co-drydamol in doses of 600mg each to be taken simultaneously. So, despite the warnings on the packs you buy from pharmacies or supermarkets, it is okay to take higher doses for short spells. If she's taking lower doses, a boost might help.

Ouch,I've always found a hot water bottle, and Nurofen have helped in the past.
Hope it eases soon

Sorry - don't have anything to add about medication etc but wanted to send my best wishes for a very speedy recovery. It truly is a miserable pain - could she get an emergency referral??

I have had awful toothache since Saturday - and could not do anything / think of anything except how painful it was - it has been exhausting. Got an emergency dental appointment this afternoon and lovely dentist has cleaned out the (very infected!) root canals (under local anaesthetic!) and put a temporary dresssing on it. Have to go back to fill the root canal and have a crown in about a month. Feeling SO much better this evening!

At least this didn't happen in 2 weeks when we will be in WDW!

Hope she feels better soon.

Glad you are feeling better :)

Have you tried ringing the emergency dentists or NHS direct?

Yep - the dentist can see her anytime day or night, but the reason she's got to wait for a full dose of sleepy drugs is she can't open her jaw wide enough for them to safely do what they need to do (although some would argue that point :teeth )

They only recommend standard painkillers annoyingly - I'm going to have a quick chat with her GP tomorrow to see if she can take a boost like Deb suggested, or maybe he can prescribe something nice and strong to take care of it.

I used Paramol extra strength when i had mine, worked a treat. i think DW's system has been stuffed so full of painkillers over the years for her various permanent conditions that she's getting immune to the effects of paracetemol and codeine.

She's got a hot water bottle against the cheek, offers temporary relief and helps her doze off (although she's still awake at the mo, unusual for this time of night).

:goodvibes

i have had nearly a year of bad toothache (its finally sorted) and believe me .. i sympathise with your DW!!

When the pain was at its worse, nurofen or advil as i usually take didnt even begin to touch it.. the ONLY thing that worked was Paracetemol (which never usually works for me at all!) and champagne!

I drank so much champagne over the first week! lol it was very very good at numbing the pain. Wine may have worked too but i didnt want to chance it when I could have champagne!

Champagne? Knowing my wife, it would have to be an expensive one to work.... :rotfl:

She's moved from the bed to the sofa, still in agony! Calling the doc this morning and paying a visit to boots.
