Thanks Marv

as long as you have a multi region dvd player american dvds will work over here.
i think uk is region 2 and usa region 1,
sure someone will be along to clarify for you!
music cds work fine in the uk

Thank You, I had been wondering the same thing too!

As said above, American DVDs are Region 1, while in Europe and the UK we are Region 2!

(The region coding was invented by the US Movie studios so they could control when films were released to DVD in different areas of the world, and so maximising earnings for the films in the cinemas).

If you have a 'multiregion' DVD player then you should be able to play region 2 DVDs. Although some DVD have added protection called 'RCE' or Region Code Enhancement. This can cause problems on some multiregion players.
You also need to check that your TV and DVD can handle the American TV format - NTSC (we use PAL in the UK). Most modern DVDs and TV can play either format.

Having said all that, there isn't that much to be saved money wise by buying in the US. You get better deals buying on-line from sites like PLAY or CD-WOW.
On of the advantages of buying DVDs in the US is that some titles are released in the US earlier than in the UK. Also, some of the extras may differ on the US version to the UK version.
If you read some of the DVD review sites, some people think the sound quality can be better on US DVDs due to the different scan rates (60Hz instead of 50Hz), not sure on the technicalities of this. I can never tell the difference :)

US CD's should have no problems playing in thep UK, although some albums may have a slightly different track list on the US version than on the UK version.

i agree that DVDs aren't really all that cheap in the US (except for some super specials they sometimes have on a few)....but i buy them because they often have lots of extra stuff on them, that they don't have on the DVDs sold where i live (also region 2).....i don't know why they don't have all that stuff on them, but it irritates me to death....

The shape of things to come using your X box 360 or playstaion 3 to watch flims or tv from the internet .This is the only reason why microsoft got into the gamming market to get there box under the tv

Well thankyou very much for your advice i may be a little more confused now as how to find out what region dvd player i have. :confused3 The kids have cheap 29.99 DVD players and all play copy films. The Dvd in living room was a more expensive VCR and DVD player and doesn't. Ime not into all the technical stuff with these machines, but i can turn it on and off :rotfl2:

Nice to nho cd's will be ok

Marv

Unless the DVD player was actually purchased as a multiregion player then it will be region 2 only.

But, on most DVD players you can enter a secret code via the remote to change the player to multiregion. This is called 'hacking'.
The ones that don't have this feature will need to be modified internally - or 'chipped' as it's called.

Check these sites for player 'hack' codes:
