I just read a post that said they have replaced the VCRs with DVD players at OKW. We are going home in October and since my DH is a very early riser, he usually likes to watch a movie. Have they made DVDs available at Hank's and is there a good selection? Just want to know whether I should bring a couple of DVDs for DH or if he can get some decent ones at Hank's. Fortunately, he's not fussy, and doesn't mind older movies. Thanks for the help.

Just got back from OKW and there was not a DVD player in our room, only VCR. It is possible that as they are refurbishing rooms, they are upgrading them to DVD. We didn't rent any videos while we were there, so I don't know what kind of selection there was.

We were just down in late July and were told that next year they are replacing ALL the VCRs with DVD players at one time. At that time they will put all new (and old) movies in at Hanks in DVD form. They want everyone to have the same thing, so they don't have to maintain different viewing formats. And it makes sense because DVD's are smaller, better quality, and more durable.

FYI, we often get movies from Hanks (another great DVC benefit!!). The selection is pretty good for both adult and kid movies. Have fun!!

Can you tell me who you heard this from?? Last I heard, OKW had no intentions of ever changing to DVD. Aren't there better ways to spend our dues anyway??

I think it would be economical in the long run. VHS players wear out and have to replaced anyway. DVD's will last a lot longer than VHS tapes. Diana

Not owning at OKW, its technically not my dues, but if the VCR's need replacing periodically anyway, I'd rather they put DVD players in their place. The price differential isn't very great these days. Maybe I'm just jaded by technology, but VHS almost seems quaint these days. :p

DVD's are significantly more prone to damage than VHS tapes are - I can't count the number of times I've rented a DVD only to find that some hoof-handed choom before me scratched the disk rendering it unplayable, or at the very least interrupting the movie in the middle.

It would be very complex logistically for OKW to simply swap out VHS players as the wore out - at the least it would require that they maintain both a DVD and VHS collection for rental, and they don't have a lot of room at Hanks for this. It would be much better if they did them all at once, but then there's also the cost associated with upgrading the collection.

Anyway, enough soapboxing - what I recall reading is that eventually all the DVC resorts would be moving to DVD, but there were no timelines involved with the migration. Whether or not what I read will actually happen is a matter of continued debate.

VCR's will be like 8-track was in the 70's. As the technology gets cheaper things will become outdated. I don't know if anyone has noticed but Disney has a couple of movie companies and can see comparable sales of VHS format to DVD format and probably is using that to base their decision on. It would not surprise me if they don't even offer VHS tapes for sale within the next few years.

Some people still own 8-tracks though...

The info came from one of the guys working at Hank's. He said they haven't added any new movies in the last couple of years because they are converting to DVD next year. I think it does make sense, because DVD players are near the same cost as VCRs, and the movies are better quality, etc. As far as the problems with DVDs, I think is partially true, but we've had damaged tapes at OKW also, so it can happen either way. I do think DVDs are the future, and it would be a good move.

I am mixed about what they do....we now only buy or reserve DVDs at home. But we tape for timeshifting and time saving with our VCRs. I know that there are recordable DVD players but still a bit too pricey for our tastes. We even tape and watch "our shows" when on vacation at DW. Seems like in the next 18 to 24 months there will be less and less titles even being released in the VHS format so eventually the DVD players should seem to be the way to go at the DVC resorts. Did BCV install DVD players or VCRs....DVD players would have seemed to make more sense?

BCV has DVD players.

I think the time period for migration from VHS to DVD (in terms of releases) will be much longer than 18-24 months - more like 5+ years before you start to see major movies only released in DVD format.

Released only on DVD maybe not but all the major rental chains in my area have already announced that they are only getting new releases in DVD's. They will still carry old releases until they wear out or are released in DVD format. So it's coming. I'm glad I'll be able to bring DVD's along on vacation. And maybe Hank's selection will get bigger since DVD's are smaller to store. Either way I'm glad to see the change coming next year. I will be there in 3 weeks and had planned to tape the WDW channel ("Tip for the Day") for a quick Disney fix.
