I am looking to purchase the entire Harry Potter series for Christmas and can't decide. We do not own a Blu-ray player, but I would purchase one. We don't have a HD TV and that is not in the budget.
We currently own only DVD's, but I have heard that Blu-ray players are backwards compatable with most DVD's.
Another option is the region free DVD and Blu-ray series from Amazon.uk for some added features.
Help! I'm sure I'm missing points to consider!

Blu Ray players can play DVDs.

Supposedly, if you want the "extras" that come in a box set, there is a different Harry Potter box set coming out next year.

It's up to you whether to buy the Blu Ray version of Harry Potter for your future HDTV set. For now (with a Blu Ray player) it will look about the same on your existing TV as a regular DVD edition.

A Blu Ray DVD player can be connected to your TV set in the same manner as your existing DVD player.

If your TV has enough inputs that you can leave both the Blu Ray player and your old DVD player connected, then you should play regular DVDs on the old player so as not to consume the finite playing time of the Blu Ray player.

Some very old TVs need an "RF modulator" between the player and the TV but regular DVD players have the same requirement.

A VCR can be used as an RF modulator even if you are not recording anything at the time.

We'll end up having it on both. We started the collection on DVD, so I picked up the last movie on DVD to complete our set. But, we got a BluRay player for Christmas last year, so when I saw the Amazon UK deal I snagged that as well. Sometimes the decider for me is who's going to be watching the movies. If it's DH I'll get Bluray. But, sometimes I get the ones the kids will be watching more on DVD, so they can watch them in cars on trips. (Though if you buy movies right when they come out, you can get the pack that has the bluray and a DVD copy.) I'm sure you'll love having the whole set, no matter which version you go with!

I was wondering the same thing since we're planning to finally get a blu ray player soon. Then I heard that next year they are releasing a full set of blu rays with lots of extra features. So I've decided to just pick up another dvd for now and wait to get the blu ray set next year.

If you don't own an HDTV there is no need to buy the Blu Rays. I don't even think you can have a blu ray with a non HDTV! You have to hook it up with a HDMI Cable and there is no HDMi on a non HDTV! If you don't ever plan on getting an hdtv, do not get the blu rays. That is pointless.

I think all Blu Ray players also have regular video jacks to connect to older TV sets.
