DVC'ers - anyone started small?

we have been looking into DVC for some months now, but want to start out with a small points contract. we figure this will help us to get our feet wet, and it will be easier to sell if we ever chose to.

has anyone else started their DVC journey this way? what were the pro's and con's for you??

any words would be great and TIA!

We didn't, we bought 220 points on our first contract. However, there are many that have done exactly what you are asking.

The only way you can buy a small contract is thru resale. If you buy a small resale contract, make sure it will provide you with enough points to use for a typical length of stay. Also, make sure the contract is no stripped of points.

I bought a 220 point BWV contract then a 100 add on to BCV paid them both off and Bought a 200point contract at AKV..

So add on s are addictive I need aa for add ons

i started with a small OKW resale contract last year. 40 pts is enough to get a studio during the holidays from sun-thurs, and i could pay it off all at once while maintenance fees are only $15ish per month. (in retrospect though, looking for a 60 pts contract would have given me more DVC options.)

i have a lot of family in FL and my parents retired there, so i expect to use a lot of the contract at wdw. but if you want to trade out, then a smaller contract can be a big limitation...i can stay at wdw, HH, VB and (if i pay a $95 fee) there are also a couple of canadian places i could theoretically stay...

it's a much, MUCH cheaper way to start, but if you need more space (1BR or bigger) or want to cruise or trade out a lot, you may feel a bit limited.

We have friends that bought 32 points from another member...They held the points in the members name, the member made ressies for them, etc.
32 points was enough for them to go every third year to OKW.
They FELL in love w/ Disney, and DVC, added on a couple more times, and now have 180 points. They had all of the contracts changed to their names, and are now full members w/ DVC.

We are doing exactly what you are thinking about. We are actually in the Right of First Refusal portion of the process, we should here this week on final closing time.

We figured 100 points ( we bought at OKW) would be enough to go next year ( banking and borrowing to get a 2br unit). Then we can see how we like it and most likely will add on points from there.

We are getting our feet wet and looking forward to our first trip next year!

Hi - we bought 100 SSR points via resale late last year and are "going home" for the first time this October - the points pay for a week in a studio in October. I am a Disney Freak and went on the SSR DVC tour when I went to WDW on my own. My husband humours my obsession so I figured the best way to tempt him in was to buy small (with a small legacy I was left) and hopefully he'll see the error of his ways and we can buy more points . . . I would love to have enough points to stay in a 1 bedroom. I think the pros are buying a small number of points is a great way to try it out and the cons are that already I know it's not enough!

We got down payment into escrow on Feb 26th. We are due to close on April 9th. Timeshare Store says not to worry but of course, I am! Don't like the waiting!

I bought 65 points at SSR. I will be going in Nov for exactly 65 for 5 nights which included Sat!! We then will do the 3 day cruise at the end. Low points is a great way to start.

I started w/ a purchase of 150 and feel like that was too small for what I want to do: go often to WDW!! I really think this just has to do with what you're looking to do with your DVC points. If you know you'll only want to go every few years and stay in a studio then go small. If you're like me and want to go often with your family/kids then you'll need more.

I'm nearly done paying off my 150 so I'm excited to add on more!

We started out with a 25 point contract. We wanted to test the waters first, too. In the end, we loved DVC, and have purchased more points since. I personally see zero downside to buying a small contract at first. That way, you are a full member, and can add-on any amount of points you want (25 or more) afterwards. Example: let's say you only want 112 points ultimately... with a small contract, you can easily add on to get exactly the 112 points you want. Just another benefit to buying small.
