Hi all! Don't want to duplicate efforts so was wondering if there is a DVC Owners Under 30 group?! Would love to meet other people who are in their 20s who own DVC :)

*Background Info : Own with my sister, no kids*

Not on the DIS as far as I know. Feel free to start your own thread here on Mouse if you're so inclined. :)

While I’ll assume there are many folks out there who own DVC and are under 30, I suspect it’s a very small percentage, and an even smaller group that can actually afford it.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure there are those in that subset…. Just not enough to justify their own forum.

DVD just recently started targeting a younger group of people, particularly with the tower studios.

I was under 30 for less than I year when I bought my first 200 points.

I am curious of the actual dvc owner demographics.

I’m also really curious! I know we are not the primary demographic so it would be interesting to see actual data!

I also am a big advocate for ONLY buying outright, no financing which I am sure hinders a lot of people under 30.

Well I *could* have bought at 28 years old (the day they started selling), but realized it was not the responsible thing to do. At that age you are not sure of future family obligations, future Carter paths/promotions, or where you want to actually settle in life.

Yes, financially it can be done… but is it wise??
For some it is.

We bought in our 30’s, but in our 40’s it became a wise idea to start selling.

Curious - what changed in the 10 year span to make you want to start selling?

Excellent question, and am happy to respond when asked.
Background… We owned roughly 2200 points over 21 contracts. Started in 2002. Owned VWL, VB, AKV, and VGC.

The initial reason for selling was a potential job loss (which indeed became an actual job loss).
We certainly could have found a way to keep most of our points, but then we took a hard look at Disney. They closed PI a few years earlier, and quality was sinking fast. Since then everything has gone downhill. Epcot turned into the Studios vs Epcot. So many things disappeared. Tapestry of Nations, the American Fife & Drum, I could go on and on. There is a thread about this on the boards somewhere.
Oh yes, a biggie… the USA hockey team vs the Soviets in the Olympics at American Adventure were removed for the Tupac shooting. Not for me. Disney lost its values/morals over the years in my opinion. Now they let cast sport tattoos and the like. Just not my Disney anymore.

I kind of wish I had bought in our 20s since we could have bought for a bit less than we paid now, but in fairness to us we both didn't know DVC existed, and had not been to Disney basically at all (except one trip when Disney Springs was Downtown Disney) during our college years and 20s. We only found our way to Disney now (well, 2019) because very close friends of ours were going annually and we tagged along once, and it was great, not at all what I thought Disney would be. We checked out a DVC stand/tour for Riviera while there and were hooked. So technically early-mid 30s was our buy in point.

If I was being realistic though, I probably would have regretted buying in our 20s. We were both doing a lot more to grow our careers and family that I think making even a trip every year or two would have been more of a chore than benefit. We weren't living near family and still had time finding time to make trips back home to see them, let alone Florida. We are more settled into our careers thanks to the effort put in during our 20s and kids are old enough to be more self sufficient now, so it's easier to look at more vacation time. Everyone is in different paths in their lives though, not saying that might be the same for everyone. Financially it would have been no problem, maybe even easier when we were DINKs, but as a commitment at a time where we were making so many other commitments, it probably would have been more burden than benefit.

We fit this category.
we are both teachers and own our points at hhi.

We used to fit this category! My wife and I have two children, we go to Disney World twice a year with the kids, once a year without them. We paid cash for our resale contracts and financed our direct contract. Only regret is wish we would have bought earlier on.

Poly resale 150 points @ 28
SSR direct 125 points @ 30
AKL resale 125 points @ 31
