We're seeking suggestions on which of the resorts to trade into near San Diego in August. We plan on staying at the DL hotel for a few days and then continuing on in San Diego. Any suggestions? We'll be traveling with our two children, ages 5 (almost 6) and 9. Also, any suggestions for character meals at DL or the DL hotel?

Thanks! :)

I've been looking into trades a bit and wanted to stay near San Diego - but there aren't many choices. Villa L'Auberge in Del Mar and Four Seasons Club Aviara in Carlsbad are the closest and near the ocean. Rivera Oaks in Ramona claims to be an hour away; Lawrence Welk Resort says it's close, too. You'll have to check out a map to be sure.

I had a search on with MS since October for a studio at Four Seasons Aviara and just cancelled it last week. Nothing came up but it is a difficult property to trade into. I've seen recommendations from Dean on this forum saying that you should have a search in a long time in advance. Good luck, I hope something comes through for you.

If you look in the guide book, there are many
properties in that area to trad into. I requested
a trade last April, and was able to get a studio
at the Four Seasons for the third week in May.
It was 55 points for the week. The property was
lovely, attached to a Four Seasons Hotel. You
could use all their facilities. I found it quite
easy to trade into this area. Perhaps because I
would have taken any of about 10 different places,
for any week in May. Anita.

downontheBW has laid out the exchange options for San Diego through DVC perfectly. Depending on your reasons for travel to that area though, you may way want to consider other options. Four seasons and Lawrence Welk will be the best resorts close to San Diego. Other resorts to consider in Southern Cal would include The Marriott's in Palm Desert and Marriott's Newport Coast just south of LA. Also look at SF, if your not tied to Southern CA.

Remember there are other resorts in II in the area not on the list and also other RCI resorts as well.

This would be a perfect area to look at one of the independent exchange companies, or even several. They have a lot of availability in CA and you might be able to get a 2 BR in exchange for a 1 BR. Another possibility would be Cabo in MX. I'd consider a search thast starts at less than 12 months out to be short term. Since some units can be deposited as much as 2 years out and many at 12-13 months, you want to be waiting on them when they are deposited since they may not hang around long. Good luck and let us know what happens. Any other questions, fire away.

Thanks for all the great advice from all of you! I have the sneaking feeling that we'll just end up staying at the DL hotel the whole time. Dean, we LOVE San Francisco! We're leaning more towards the south, however so that we might catch up with some relatives that we haven't seen in about 10 years. Any advice for me with the DL Hotel? Special things to do for the 5 and 8 year old set? We've gotten spoiled at DW all these years and hope that CA isn't a let-down. We loved Wilderness Lodge and Cabins, Boardwalk and the cruise. Any suggestions?
