Hello...

Not too sure best place to post this....

DH and I would like rent a DVC for a week.
Does anyone know how we can do this?
Has anyone done this before and share their experience, was or a nightmare?

Thank you,
Poly princess:

We have rented points for our last three trips, two directly with dvc owners and once through an agency. We rented Aulani through an agency this way it was a bit more secu as it was quite a big purchase. I would suggest checking out the dvc section of this board and it will give you lots of direction as to how to rent. It can be a great value.

I used Timeshare Store three times. Very happy, it is a great way to get an amazing deluxe resort for price of value or Mod (depending on deal)

I booked Boardwalk for $150 less for three nights then a Mod resort... :cool1:

I have also booked in the past deals in OKW and SSR for less than a value

i rented once. worked out fine but i didn't like not being in control of the reservation (and i visit wdw every year or so anyway), so i bought my own contract.

you do need to do your homework and know who you are renting from (brokers like david do provide a bit of a safety net.) you also need to plan well in advance as timeshares tend to book up earlier than hotel rooms (since DVC owners who fail to use their pts, lose their pts)...and make sure your plans are solid since you typically have no option to cancel the reservation and get your money back.

(also, you only get limited housekeeping every 4th day or so...but i like that part of timesharing.)

I have rented from individuals that I found here on the Dis boards, as well as have booked directly through WDW. Both of my rental experiences worked out well. However, you take a chance that something could happen with your individual rental agreement, so you need to weight that against the cost savings. Consequently, some prefer to rent points directly from an Agency and it I was renting for a longer period, this might be the way to go since it would insure that your rental is legit. This go around we are going directly with WDW's free dinning offer but I would consider renting points again. If you choose to rent from an individual do a search on their posts which will give you a sense on their Dis history. Best of luck. I hope you get other tips!

I would consider renting as well but it's the "not having control over the contract" that concerns me. I'll have to check the DVC threads on the Dis.

We just rented for next year for the first time. We used stayatwdw to rent ours. I have been extremely pleased with the process. While we may not have control over our reservation, I can see it and will be able to do my own ADR. The only thing I can't do is add the ME to it once we can book our flights. I am actually ok with this as the price for staying at BLT over the same price for POR was an easy decision.

We are new DVC owners and rented points for spring break 2013 because we won't have enough of our own. Could have had Wyndham Bonnett Creek 2 bedroom villa for 1/2 the price of a DVC studio, but we are such suckers...we can't stay off property!
Anyway, I rented from someone on the DIS boards and it's been great. She was wonderful with checking resorts and dates so we could plan our vaca. Currently we have 4 nights at BWV and 5 at OKW. She has wait listed BWV for those second 5 nights and once we are 7 mos out, she will check all non-home resorts to get us in somewhere else, if available. She charged $11/point and we paid a deposit of 1/2 the total through Paypal. The remainder is due 45 days before we arrive (I think!). I hate not having control of the reservation, but since we are already DVC members, I can check resort availability and if there is one we'd rather have, I just have to let her know!

.....and he was amazing. Transaction was smooth, seamless, and he has been on top of everything making sure all goes well. We leave next Friday and I don't expect any issues at checkin.

He has asked that I leave feedback when we return and I have no issue doing this as he has been amazing. Promptly answers emails, dealt with my many questions and changes, and just over all seems like an honest, trustworthy person.

If it weren't for renting DVC we'd not be staying on site as we can't justify the cost. However, by renting via an owner we will spending no more (possibly even less) to stay on site versus off site.

If you are interested I can give you his contact info. I do not think you'd be disappointed.

Here's what my research indicates are the pros and cons of renting points:

Pros:

1. Huge savings (as much as 70% less than booking direct through Disney)

2. Along the lines of 1, can get a villa at the deluxe level with in-unit washer/dryer, kitcken, etc. for less than a value suite.

3. Two bedroom villas are particularly nice for large families (or families traveling with grandparents, etc.) because you're guaranteed to be in the same unit.

4. Still have access to most of the benefits of staying on-site (e.g., Magical Express, EMH, free parking, bus service, dining plans, etc.).

Cons:
1. Must book early (the most popular places, such as BLT, can quickly book up 11 months out).

2. You're not in control of the reservation in that you can't communicate directly with Disney (although a good broker or cooperative owner should make this a relatively minor downside).

3. If you rent points through a broker, you typically must pay all costs up front, which are nonrefundable (although vacation insurance can mitigate a good amount of this risk).

4. If you rent points directly from an owner, you run the risk of being taken (so doing your homework and dealing with someone you can trust is huge).

5. You won't get daily maid services and towel replenishment unless you pay extra (but some see this as an advantage in that you don't have someone knocking on your door every day to clean your room, i.e., more privacy).

6. You won't be eligible for free dining (but you're saving so much more than FD, plus you can cook/eat in your villa).

Rent
I have an upcoming trip to BCV, first time staying there, and I am so excited. My original reservation was a sale rate at POP, the change cost me 65.00/night. I never thought I would have been able to stay at a deluxe resort before I started renting.

I have rented points from three different DVC owners. First stay was OKW, which cost less than original reservation at POFQ. Second stay was WL, it was early February and it was so nice to have a beautiful lobby to hang out in during our non park vacation. The third time I was lucky enough to be able to stay at BLT, in a room that overlooked the lake. It was so nice to be able to walk to MK, see the fireworks from the BLT private lounge and take the monorail around to see Christmas decorations.

I have only done 2-4 night stays each time. So I did not have a huge cash payout to worry about. I also spoke with each of the owners, which made me feel more comfortable. I tend to book these reservations very close to the dates that I will be leaving, which means that my money is not tied up for very long. I have had great owners to work with each time! I have never been able to book a moderate for cheaper than the cost to rent. And POR is one of my favorite resorts, not sure when I will stay there again though.

One thing. Never rent from someone who tells you that you will be required to pay a $95 fee when you arrive. Walk away from that one. That is an RCI trade into DVC and it is not permitted to be sold.

Also, do not reply to someone who private messages you or emails you without you first making contact with them. There have been a few people burned by responding to someone not authorized to sell their points on the DIS.

We rented for our trips this past February (BCV) and April (SSR). Loved them both! We rent through David's because I like the sense of security I get with him and his team. They are very easy to work with. Yes, I could get the points a little cheaper but, to me it's worth the extra couple bucks to know that I'll have a room when I get there and that someone didn't just take my money and run.

The RCI comment above caught my attention. Because a friend of mine said that she and her fiance just bought into some RCI time share thing and that Disney was part of that because it showed BWV. I was so confused and doubted her a little. How does that work?

They can trade their timeshare for a DVC stay depending on the trading value of their timeshare. If they bought an Orlando area timeshare, it cannot be traded into DVC at WDW. Trades are usually for a week - Sat to Sat. A DVC owner who wants to stay in an RCI resort, puts their points up for a trade.

Thank you! I feel less like she was scammed now. :thumbsup2

Sorry for the hijack! :)

I don't want to high jack OP's thread, but what does "do your homework" mean exactly? What should a person do or ask if they want to safely rent points?

There are some posts on the DVC Rent/Trade Board at the top of the board that can give you some tips in helping to make an informative purchase.

Rent! We rented for the first time in February at AKL and have also rented for our upcomming November trip at the Boardwalk. Great value. as others mentioned you can stay at a Deluxe resort for about the same price as a moderate or a little less.

Here are some helpful hints from a DVC owner.

Login to the DIS and check out the stickies at the top of the DVC Rent/Trade threads.

Rent from a owner who has many posts on the DIS, this shows that they have been around for awhile and not just here to rent and disappear.

Use a owner who has a written agreement.

Use a owner who provides all of their contact info, email, phone, address.

Use a owner who has references.

Talk to the owner and get to know them before to send them your money.

We rented points last year through David's and had a great experience. I would definitely use him again.
