I booked quite a few trips less than 7 months in advance as owner for the first year. I did a lot of research before buying into DVC, but still feel I wish I knew more. Knowing what will be available to book should be one of the top ones before pulling the trigger. It might also help current owners since most of us don't have home resort priority for all resorts, and not all of us plan all trip early enough.
Although resort popularity, point chart (low point rooms book out faster), refurb schedule are sometimes more important, knowing the inventory - how many rooms exist in each category - will always help.
I have been leveraging resources below but they need an update since the names of the room types have changed, plus new rooms have been added. I started with studios as that's what I am most familiar with at the moment. I might update for 1B and 2B if time permits.

Disclaimers: I have confidence in other numbers except those for Polynesian Island Tower, especially the Deluxe Studios. First, it's not easy to count and differentiate dedicated studios vs. lockoff/lockout. Second, only 17 of 39 Duo Studios and 29 of 91 Tower Studios have been declared. So, don't be surprised if the numbers are off.
The numbers match my experience that
1. SSR could be the only option around 1- or 2-month mark.
2. OKW, Poly, AKV Kidani Savanna view, BLT Preferred, and even BoardWalk Garden/Pool view could be available 3-5 months before the trip.
3. AKV Resort view (as an economical choice) and VGF/BPK Resort Studios (as a high-point luxury choice) are not impossible close to the 7-month mark as long as you only need a short stay.
4. Don't count on Beach Club, BoardWalk, AKV Value or Club without home resort priority. Nor holidays and first half of December of most resorts.
Yet, all it takes is one cancellation if you are stalking or waitlisting. Cheers!
