I've done a little research and it seems like the way to get a good price on a resort that is close to MK or Epcot is by renting points for DVC.

I'd like to go next Fall sometime.

It will be me and my daughter. Maybe my husband too but I'm not sure yet.

Can someone be my teacher so I can get started looking. I don't know where to start.

Thanks!

Things to know:

1. Fall near Epcot is a very difficult booking. Both Beach Club and Boardwalk are small properties, and many owners bought there to book during Food & Wine.
2. You will want to have an owner lined up at 11 months for most studios near Epcot in fall during F&W, as they will book up between 11-7 months.
3. Boardwalk Standard Studios are nearly impossible to rent in fall. Budget for Pool/Garden View for best hope of a booking.
4. You will not receive daily housekeeping staying DVC on points. You get trash & towel on day 4.
5. The DVC owner will control your reservation, although it will be in your name.
6. You will not qualify for any additional Disney discounts on a rental (no free dining, etc.)
7. You are eligible for 180+ ADRs, 60 day FP+ and Magical Express.
8. You can buy the dining plan via the DVC member you rent from.

David's DVC is a sponsor of the DIS and highly reputable. Or, you can look for the DVC Rent/Trade forum and try to find someone renting Boardwalk or Beach Club points 11 months before you wish to go. The points have a Use Year, and the use by date must be AFTER your stay for the owner to rent for you.

the easiest way is to go to that link (he is a DISboard sponsor) - read the FAQ and take your time to understand the process.

alternatively, here are a couple of threads from the disboards on renting.

the short version is that DVC is a timeshare. fall is PEAK season for DVC so booking 11 months out is typically necessary. the downside is that there are typically no cancellations allowed, so you'd need to be very firm on your dates.

also, studios tend to have 1 queen bed plus 1 pullout sofabed (OKW studios have 2 queens). and as a timeshare, DVC does not come with daily housekeeping.

so there are downsides but the price can be worthwhile for some (but not for others).

Ok, thanks. Also looking into booking at the Swan. Love the location and there's no learning curve to that. Just stalking for a good rate.

There's not so much of a learning curve if you go with DVC By Request - and I'm not just saying that because they're a sponsor. I've used them several times. They provide a clear explanation of the process on their site, and the agreement they give you when you rent spells out the terms very well.

Here are the big differences between renting a reservation from an individual and booking a hotel room:

1. Planning well in advance is essential. Timeshare owners book earlier than hotel guests do, and fall is a very busy time for DVC. You need to start looking now for next fall.

2. Whether you rent from a broker like DVC By Request or directly from an owner, it's important to realize that your reservation is final. Changes are usually not possible, and refunds won't be happening if you cancel. Personally, I think travel insurance (that covers a timeshare rental) is a must.

3. DVC, like many timeshares, has a pay-as-you-go housekeeping system. Limited housekeeping services are included with your reservation, if you want additional cleanings, there's an extra charge.

4. Your reservation is with the broker or owner, not Disney. If there's a problem with the reservation, Disney won't get involved to help you, and you won't be eligible for any Disney promotions like free dining.

Epcot resorts are good for Epcot and Studios - the bus transportation to the MK is iffy - that means it is definitely there and works - the iffy part is sometimes you might be sharing a bus with other resorts (lunch time)
Epcot resorts renting DVC is a much better bargain than renting MK (again through DVC).

the MK monorail resorts with DVC are all new - so they cost more and probably will always.

the MK resorts are good for MK and Epcot - you can walk to the MK from BLT only - monorail or boat from Polyn and GF.

Standard views at BLT and BWV are hard to get. Standard views especially during the food/wine festival can sell out on the date they are released (11th months before you arrive)

if you are going to spend most of your time in MK - would go with MK resort (if you can get one)

WL is also a DVC resort close to the MK - but DVC is really making a mess there would either pass it by this trip - or make your reservation there and just realizes that the views will be blocked. It is priced more like the epcot resorts

I have rented through a private owner twice. If you want Epcot resort area in the fall you will need to book well in advance. I had an owner lined up 12 months ahead of time ready to book BCV.

Deluxe resort at moderate prices?!?! Its the only way we will do Disney from now on

I used a different rental broker and had no trouble booking BWV for late September. Of course, 11 months out was before F&W dates were announced, and it wasn't even clear whether it would start by our dates. As it turned out, they started a couple of weeks earlier this year than last.

I haven't seen any ads here from David's recently. That could be because I don't spend much time in the DVC forums anymore, but I wonder if they're still a sponsor, and I don't want to get in trouble for violating any forum rules. In any event, between the two largest rental brokers, if you read their FAQs, etc. you'll get plenty of good information.

Also, I touched base with them a few days before my earliest booking date. This let me confirm the earliest time for my request as well as my other expectations and put me on the radar of their agent who has been my contact point ever since. That seems like a good strategy regardless of which agency you use.

Thanks! I really appreciate all the help. I think we are going to try to just book normally for the Swan and leave renting points for another time. I also forgot about F&W. That is not an event that I'm interested in so maybe we'll try to choose a different time. I was really just wanting to get back there during the 45th anniversary at some point.

EPCOT-WS is very busy during F&W, even during weekday nights, forget about weekend nights! We saw less crowds in June than we did last Oct. If you plan on spending time at WS and F&W does not interest you, I would plan my trip during a different time of the year if possible.

Gary, the trick is that you type out the URL of the website of the company you want to discuss. Click to preview. If it comes through correctly, it's not banned* and it's ok to talk about them. When the dis bans a company from being discussed the URL will come though like this: www.xxxxxxxxxxxx.com

That's how we know. If it's x'ed out, don't try to get past the filter. Doing that is against the rules. But as far as I know, innocently posting a site that is x'ed out isn't a dis crime. That's why they x it out, so even if a mistake is made the site won't come through.

*or in one case as described on the DCL board a trip insurance company asked to be "banned" because so much traffic came through and they didn't want that for some reason.
