There's not so much of a learning curve if you go with
DVC By Request - and I'm not just saying that because they're a sponsor. I've used them several times. They provide a clear explanation of the process on their site, and the agreement they give you when you rent spells out the terms very well.
Here are the big differences between renting a reservation from an individual and booking a hotel room:
1. Planning well in
advance is essential. Timeshare owners book earlier than hotel guests do, and fall is a very busy time for DVC. You need to start looking now for next fall.
2. Whether you rent from a broker like DVC By Request or directly from an owner, it's important to realize that your reservation is final. Changes are usually not possible, and refunds won't be happening if you cancel. Personally, I think
travel insurance (that covers a timeshare rental) is a must.
3. DVC, like many timeshares, has a pay-as-you-go housekeeping system. Limited housekeeping services are included with your reservation, if you want additional cleanings, there's an extra charge.
4. Your reservation is with the broker or owner, not Disney. If there's a problem with the reservation, Disney won't get involved to help you, and you won't be eligible for any Disney promotions like
free dining.
