DVC Rentals: Tact and Ethics by Renters

I think a FAQ sticky is a good idea.

I'm simply amazed at some of the NEGATIVE comments in this thread. "Should get out renting", etc, etc. And "rules won't ever work". Owners have rules on their side and I am sure before they were in play people thought the same thing.

I am well aware of what needs to be done and how to do it myself. I simply offered this as an education tool and point of discussion. No one is saying to put these into official effect, was just an opportunity to discus things.

Some of you took this WAY WAY out of context. Some of you made wonderful suggestions and I thank you.

There was no reason for any negatively here.

I hope you don't mind me making a comment as a renter. I've been lucky enough to find someone who I can work with very well.

Sometimes you feel as if you have to jump on something before completely discussing it with a spouse/significant other because those points disappear before you can blink.
Unfortunately, it's a risky situation for both parties. You also have inexperienced people trying to rent their points and those who would like to rent.

No we welcome the input, at least I do.

And I am not talking about a case in which is there are maybe's. I am talking about a case where you come in and saw I need August 25th, here in this room. The owner gives you EXACTLY that at the exact price you want.

I'm sorry but if someone does that, I will not deal with them anymore. I would never do that to someone on here. Ever.

I may add to my list: never start a conversion with any renter who does not first identify his ID on the forum and also you can ask "are you ready to rent and pay right now".

thanks

Aren't these really items that should be addressed by individual owners with a renter upon initial contact, before even checking any availability?

YES. But it helps if renters are made aware of the possible rules as well.

Getting back to your suggestion of a sticky thread:

Really, there are a lot of people, owners and renters, that do not read the sticky we have now. And it is labeled "**How to use this Board** - PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING" We still get a lot of people submitting threads without having the required number of postings or having paid the R/T Membership and submitting Reservation Wanted and Point Transfer Wanted threads. It takes quite a bit of moderator time as it is.

You can make all the sticky threads you like, but you can't make people read them. LOL

That's exactly right.

I'm a professor at a major research university. My students are by and large pretty darn smart---great grades in high school, very high SAT/ACT scores, etc. etc. If I had a dollar for every time I've had a student ask me a question that was directly answered in the assignment handout, I'd have enough to buy a sizable DVC contract....from the developer.

Some of the resistance (at least mine) to a FAQ or Sticky is due to the fact that the people who most need to read them do not bother.

For example, I can tell you from experience, that we mods decline many more submissions to the Rent/Trade Board than we approve. If the posters would read the Sticky Thread before posting, a whole lot more of the submissions would be approved or not submitted at all. Based on some of the responses we get to the declinations, some posters do not think the requirements should apply to them. :confused3

I would also like to point out that much of what you seek is already contained in the Sticky Thread at the top of the Rent/Trade Board, although perhaps it is not organized in the best possible manner:

**How to use this Board** - PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

The provided links in post #1 of that thread are good reading for prospective renters and owners alike.

If the replies surprise you that is due to the fact you chose the wrong audience for your topic. Most everyone on the DVC forums are savy to most all things DVC including rentals.

If you were wanting to help those that don't know, it probably would have been more useful to put it on the Resorts forums where newbies to DVC renting are always asking questions. I would suggest you make it a little more friendly, "gets my goat" is not really a term that comes across as being accessible to asking questions.

These problems are why i will only do transfer of points to other members, so much easier!

X2

Have never rented my points out and more the likely never will, but if I was going to it would be a transfer only and it would be that I have x points for rent and they are X dollars, no negotiating, sign this and payment prior.

I think most folks who rent are good folks, but there are just a few who don't know what they want and will drive you crazy.
