I am not sure if this is the correct area for such a post, so please redirect me if necessary!

I am interested in possibly renting DVC points for an upcoming trip. Can someone give me more details on how I would go about doing so? I have checked out David's rentals but see that there is also an avenue here on DIS to enter into rental agreements with DVC members. That being said, I was wondering if you all could give me a run down of the overall process, how that works, anything in particular I need to know? (I have read the intro thread on the DIS rental board and will, of course, do my due diligence to check references, etc.) Average cost of points? Additional/hidden fees? Anything else to be aware of?

Thanks so much for any help you all can offer!!!

You really don't rent the points, you are renting the reservation. The points are just the way of calculating the cost of the reservation.

Really easy, contact a person on the rent/trade board and start a conversation, they will need to know when, where and how many people.

If you are looking for something within 7months any points can be used, and if you are looking between 7 and 11 months you would look for a person who has points for the resort you would like to stay at.

Hope this helps.

Be sure to see what a similar reservation would cost thru Disney directly - as cost is the primary reason to rent from a DVC Member.

You should also realize that you will not get daily housekeeping (DVC members don't either) and with a rental you will not have as generous a refund policy as with Disney.

Good luck! :)

And I can still get a dining plan? Use Disney transportation? Anything else to be aware of? Any hidden fees or additional fees other than the price per point?

Yes, you can still add one of the dining plans but the person you rent from will have to do it. You can also use Magical Express.

Again, the owner will have to arrange it for you.

There are no hidden fees and it's usually the price per point, although there is a room tax or something with stays at Aulani.

Everything and anything, though, will be up to the owner, as these are private transactions.

I would say the only thing to understand is that you are not booking with Disney, and therefore, the reservation is owned by the DVC member until you check in. Typically, terms are very strict and you won't have the flexibility that you would if you book with Disney.

Also, you don't get mousekeeping daily, unless you pay extra. For stays 7 nights or less, they will come on day 4 to replace the towels and empty trash. For those that are 8 nights or more, you get a cleaning on day 4 and trash and towel service on day 8.

Just be sure that you have a clear understanding of the terms. The savings can be very good but there are things you have to be comfortable with if you go forward.

Good luck!

I rented points 3 times before deciding to buy and had a wonderful transaction every time. I used the same person for two of them which was nice as the trust was already there on both sides.

There is usually a strict no cancellation policy or if you do cancel, you lose most, if not all of your investment. So be sure of your dates :)

Other than that, the owner will need to arrange anything you would like to add to the reservation.

just be aware that "free dining" is never an option with points stays.

Use Disney transportation?

all onsite benefits apply: free bus to/from the airport, buses/boats/monorail/walking to the parks, free parking your car at the parks, extra magic hours, free delivery from the parks to your resort, access to the disney dining plan (you don't even have to buy tickets directly from disney).

Anything else to be aware of? Any hidden fees or additional fees other than the price per point?

1) the DVC owner controls the reservation until you check in.

2) you're probably in trouble if you need to cancel.

nothing else to be worried about.
