I feel so bad for all the families here who were scammed.



It is nice to hear how much the DIS moderators are doing to help, though. We like to think of our site as a safe one; these actions help to keep it safe for all (within reason)

Pleased to report the offending DVC member FINALLY refunded me my money after hot pursuit from an attorney and threat to file a criminal complaint since it became clear over time he actually cancelled the reservations and not DVC. Thanks to the mods and all others supportive throughout these past few months. Better luck next time is my hope!

So glad to hear you received your refund! I too admire your upbeat attitude and hope DVC works for you in the future. We rented points about three times until I convinced DH we should buy our own points.

I am so glad you got a refund but sorry it had to end up so horrible. I think your attorney must have really helped. I am glad the mods now have warned others also about this terrible member who preys on the good people who want to have a magical time with their family.

Just had a newbie question regarding all of this Why is it that we can't have a thread that lists the names of the people that are known scammers? Sure they could change their username, etc, but it seems like not all do, and on top of that, I know that when I have rented I had a name, phone number, email and address of the owner. I know I would like to have a place I could check out known scammers before I rent.
Just curious what the reason is that we couldn't start one of these -and don't worry I wasn't planning on it or anything as I see it's a rule here,- I was just wondering why.

Because the DIS doesn't allow it. It might open them up to lawsuits. Plus give Disney a whole list of names right here to start working on. DVC isn't crazy about members renting out their points.

Certainly the DIS prohibiting such a thread is a decision they can make...and I don't know why they made that decision. But I can think of some possibilities.

One, the "lawyer in me" believes one person's misunderstanding is another person's "scam"...I could see a LOT of people, angry at miscommunication, posting that someone is a scammer when in fact mistakes were made, but scams weren't part of it. Also, who would have the responsibility of checking on allegations made? There are people in this world who could report as a scam out of maliciousness...think ugly divorce situations! And these thoughts don't even begin to touch libel/slander implications...

Bottom line, if it were me (and it isn't!) making this decision, I'd not allow this kind of a thread either!!!

Anyway, just thoughts from a person who was scammed (way back when in 2006 and the DIS folks were wonderfully supportive ... and I contributed to my "victim-hood" by not knowing what I was doing and not taking the time to learn!)...

Renting is and probably always will be a transaction that involves trust...there's no "third-party protection" that will work. Do what you need to do to make yourself personally comfortable (for some people it will be checking ownership records; others will want to talk to their renters to get a sense of security; still others want contracts...it varies person to person, on both sides of the transaction)...and sadly, it probably will always be true that there will be an occasional scammer that slips through the cracks...but generally, renting has been a boon for me (I've rented a reservation for my family once; gotten a points transfer once; and rented out a reservation to another person twice)--

If you don't have trust, and can't figure out a way to develop it, don't rent--but there ARE ways to maximize your chances...
