Does anybody know if you can use the DVC points for cruises and if you can, how do you determine how many points you need per person?

Yes, and there is a point chart. Points are per person based on accommodations, cruise, and time of year. For instance, a summer 3 night cruise on the Wonder is 137 points per person for an outside stateroom, no balcony. The 7 night Eastern cruise is 248 points per person in the same season. It's around 210 points in the spring, I think..

It's really not a good use of points. You can rent your points for $10 per point and come out ahead.

Dirk is 100% correct. Using your DVC points to book a cruise is not a very good use of your points. Your DVC points have a current value of 10-11 dollars per point in the open market, that is if you wanted to sell or rent them out. Therefore, if you take the number of points needed to make a cruise reservation and multiply that number by 10.00 dollars, there you have your cost. now, go to the DCL web site and try to book that same cruise with cash, i am sure it will be much cheaper to pay cash. So, as Dirk said you are much better off renting out your points and paying cash.

If you decide to pay cash for your cruise your best bet will be to go to a travel agent that offers a cash rebate back on your trip. Going directly to the Dinsey website is the most expensive way to do a cruise. Your best bet is to book as early as you can to get the best rate. We booked our 4 night crusie for July 8 2007 on December 22. We got a rate that was cheaper than Disney and we are getting a $100 cash rebate per room back once we complete our trip. If you use points Disney gives you credit for about $7.5 per point.
