DVC Point renting

New to the DIS Boards, But not to DVC. Have a open question about renting out points. We have been members for a few years and have never had to rent out our points. However last year we bought a new resort and have extra points that expire next year we are consider renting out. My question to those that have done this. Is it a hassle to deal with the people? Is it better to just let someone else deal with the paperwork and questions? IE: Davids, DVCresale, Redwek. I have rented out many times my Wyndham rentals with redweek but not sure they would be the best for Disney. Any opinions. Looking for advise. TIA.

I have rented my points to others a few times and have been the renter of points once. I have had great experiences although I cannot claim I did anything special; I think I just got lucky.

I used to rent through brokers, but now rent here on the rent/trade thread. It is a bit more work to vet potential renters and communicate, though some transactions are done in a couple hours. It just depends on how motivated your potential "renter" is to get it done.

I now prefer to control the rental and deal directly with the renter. I've met some very nice people and have repeat renters. Good luck!

We've put up points to rent with David's twice. Both times it was very easy and David's was great to work with.

I use brokers because I don't want the "what if" of hassle. I'm certain 80% of rentals are not a hassle. And I'm sure that the remaining 20% go from "oh, not a biggie" to "oh, my god, I will be so ready when this is DONE!" Between the "bargainers" and "lookers" who you won't deal with to the person who you rent your points to who turns out to be high maintenance "can we move this reservation, can we add this request, my brother in law is coming and bringing his girlfriend, we will need to add two more names to our already full studio" to "I know our final payment is due now, but I need just a few more weeks because some other emergency came up" - I just don't want to deal with it. Brokers remove that risk from the equation. I have enough stress in my life that I don't want the POSSIBILITY of the stress of a high maintenance renter.

The nice thing about DVC Rental Store is that they send out a list of available reservations to book for people wanting to rent their points, so you can choose whichever one(s) you want to do. Of course it is unlikely that there will be an available rental that uses the exact amount of points you are looking to rent; to rent out all of your points you will probably need to do a rental that uses slightly more points than you are looking to rent, borrowing from the next UY as necessary.

With brokers you will give them the range of points you want rented out. It helps to be flexible - i.e. be able to borrow a few from next year. You can set a floor. But with any rental, if you have 125 points to rent, and only 125 points you want to rent, finding a renter who needs EXACTLY 125 points will be difficult - you might find someone who needs 90 - then have 35 points to find a home for - which might not happen at all. So having a 125 point floor and a 150 pont ceiling (for example) will get you someone who needs 132 or 136.

It's fairly simple and straightforward, just check out all the other rental threads and follow the rules and you should rent them out quickly and easily.
A lot of the renter's are DVC members who have run out of points and already know how the system works.
Looking at your message count I think you would have to purchase the DVC Gold rental package to be able to advertise your points for rent, full information is provided in the yellow notices at the top of the DVC rent/trade forum.

It really depends on your temperament. It takes some time and a little effort, but you potentially can earn and additional $1.5-2 per point than what the brokers will pay you.

A good analogy is that it's like selling a car. Renting your points through a broker is like taking the quick and easy route of trading the car in at the dealership; really easy with minimum hassle, but probably not the highest price you could potentially get. Renting them yourself is like selling your car privately; much more work, and you may well end up dealing with a lot of picky, annoying and/or flaky people, but you should be able to get a bit more money in exchange for all of that work.

I sold a car once and after the car had been transferred, the guy came back - he'd crashed it and wanted his money back. (Seriously). Some things aren't worth an extra $100 or $200.

If you want to use an agency to rent out your points, you really need to take the time to read the terms and conditions on the websites for each agency. The rules for you are not the same on each agency. (I am not referring to the rules for the people who want to get the points.)

Yes I agree. I have been trying to do my research on each site and read all I can about the process for each 3rd party. Thanks.

That would be unheard of...The guy must have been nuts. Hope you were able to send him down the road without a hassle..

People are nuts. And no, I didn't get rid of him without a hassle - I was a single 22 year old woman and he was a big guy who knew where I lived. Police were involved. And the threat of a lawsuit (on his part). So I'm a little biased on the whole "pay someone so you don't get the hassle" - I have not done a private sale of a car since then - I don't need someone suing me over a DVC rental.

If you rent out points through an agency, the agency contacts you and asks if you are willing to make the reservation. If you say yes, the agency gives you all of the information. You make the reservation just like you would make a reservation for yourself, except you enter someone else's name, address, etc.

So to answer your question - the DVC member is the one who notifies DVC that the points are being used, because the points get used to make the reservation. But nobody tells DVC that the points are being "rented out."
