DVC or resale for a 25 pt add-on at VWL?

If I do an add-on through Disney, it's $101 per point and I get my points right away w/ the same UY (Aug).

If I buy resale, I can probably get somewhere in the $85-90 per point range, but I've got higher closing fees, and a longer process (& ROFR stress), and I've got to find the right contract.

Am I correct in thinking that for this type of a transaction, it's smarter and much easier to go through Disney? What are the closing costs if I go through DVC?

I thought they had disallowed small add-ons directly through Disney. I thought the minimum point purchase is now 100 points. Your only choice for a contract that small may be resale.

I too am thinking the same thing. I looked at a 30 point contract at BWV for resale. Asking 85 per point. That's $2550. But then there's $322 in closing costs, which basically raises the per point cost to $95.74. And.....there are no points available til 10/1/10. Even if I made an offer for 80 or 81, and it was accepted, I have to wait til 10/1/09 to be able to borrow, and I don't like the closing costs. I'm thinking of just going thru Disney for 25 points, and being done with it.....even though I SWORE I'd never buy another add on again :confused3

The new 100 point add-on minimum is currently only for BLT.

There are currently no closing costs on add-ons direct from DVC.

DeeCee, does that contract have the same use year you currently have? If it's a differnet use year you would also get 2 more waitlists per year with the new membership number.

That's what I thought, but it seemed too good to be true.

Figure on a 25 pt contract, the $322 closing costs for a resale comes to almost $13 per point. A contract selling for $85 per point is really selling for $98 per point, and Disney is selling at $101.

For $3 per point, or about $75 total, it's faster, less hassle, and you get the UY you want.

Now, it seems that the bigger the contract, the more the scales tip in favor of resale, but for 25 pt. contracts, Disney seems like a better deal.

Am I missing something?

And direct from Disney you can use a credit card.

Proper use of a rewards card and timing the purchase to give yourself almost 2 months of float should easily be worth 2.5-3%.

That's an awesome perk. I'd never put it on my card and leave it, but I'd happily put it on my card, get the rewards points, and write a check to VISA.

Isn't it amazing how Disney makes you happy to give them your money. That's Disney's real "best kept secret".

There is always a possibility that Disney won't have the inventory and you will have to wait with them also. Availability seems to improve in March and April due to Disney foreclosing on non dues payers.

Yes, same UY, and I want same UY (that's if I even do an add on), we very rarely waitlist, I think counting for my DD's upcoming March trip, this is only the second time, so waitlisting is secondary to UY for us, but thanks, good point:)

We're thinking about adding on through Disney instead of resale (where we got our first contract) too. I know the minimum is 25, but can you go in increments of 5 from there or 25?

I hope I don't have to waitlist for BWV. We are looking to use the new points to book this weekend for January 2010. Would it go through that fast if they had BWV points?

No, you aren't missing anything. For a small contract, it is far better to buy directly from Disney.

I think you can add on any number above 25 eg 34 or 49. Points would be in your account almost as soon as your guide finishes talking to you, once he has taken your card details. Call him and see what he can do, you may need to wait for points in your UY to become available.

Thanks for the info! I have already left a message for my guide to see what he can do. Should I just get what I can that's close to my UY?

for 25 - 49 points you have to pay cash.

50+ they can finance.

When we did our VWL add-on we did 120 point add-on.

Then we called back two days later and I asked my guide how many points were left in our UY.. 28.. so I took them all!

They were 4 different contracts (29, 28, 47 and 44) so we had to sign 4 different sets of paperwork. That was a pain... but well worth it!

I believe when your doing an add-on you have to keep the same UY unless you're purchasing an new full set of points..... min 160 right now right?

We asked about it when we did our add-on.

So, if they don't have any points in your UY, you'll have to wait.

I left a message for my guide yesterday and I haven't heard from him. How long does it usually take to hear? I need to get the points added by Friday, if it's possible.

Update: My guide called back today and the only availability is a different UY than what we have. He said we don't have to have the same one but the month didn't work for us because of the time of year we go.
