DVC Newbie...Please help!!!

I'm a little confused. I just returned from Disney Saturday and inquired about Ak during the presentation for the Grand Floridian and was advised that they were sold out. Any light you can shed on this would be helpful. Thanks

Sold out essentially means they are pushing another resort. They still have points if you really want to buy them direct you could if you push your guide. Plenty of resale points available

Hi Charles, I just read this morning the new change. You can now book a hotel w/DVC attached to it including A of A. I was surprised not to have seen it here yet.

You have also been able to book the Grand Californian hotel rooms since last year.

Your post isn't old news. It was just announced that points can be used at resorts like BWI, WL, AKL, etc. Until now, once a resort had a DVC resort added on, it was no longer possible to book the hotel side with points other than a few exceptions like the Grand Californian.

ETA: I just checked the members' website again and the date on the announcement is Feb 24 (yesterday). Here is the list of hotels that have just been added to the Disney Collection:

The new additions include Disney’s Art of Animation Resort and traditional hotel rooms at five resorts in the Disney Vacation Club neighborhood – Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, Disney’s Beach Club Resort, Disney’s BoardWalk Inn, Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge.

So the Grand Californian was okay to book last year. But as of 2/24 hotels that have a DVC attached to it are now included in the collection. So this is new news.

(I know before - once a DVC was built attached to the hotel, you could not trade into it anymore. I got the impression from the reply I was giving old news - my bad ).

But the number of points required to book a hotel room is awful. And the rule of four still limits members from getting last minute hotel rooms when they can't book a DVC resort.

At DL the rule of 4 does not apply so it can be helpful there- especially since there is only the one DVC resort and it's a small one.

One good scenario is if one uses points for a cruise and has to cancel. They can use the points for the Disney Collection - yes?

Not sure, but I think this is the link to the Florida statute that regulates time share sales. OP right above where you signed is there a paragraph advising you that you have 10 days to cancel? Note you must do so in writing.
Have you looked @ the Timeshare Users group (TUG) they are super helpful re: how to cancel/rescind.
OP doesn't mention whether they borrowed money from DVC to purchase their AKV points, but that is a complicating factor if they need to qualify for financing to do a resale, not insurmountable, but an extra hurdle.
If I were going to pay direct prices, I would certainly only do so for GF points, as they are more likely to hold their value a bit longer and we know AKV has recently been down even in the $60s and $70s.
I read somewhere that although DVC has declared AKV sold out, they in fact still have something like 270,000 pts. to sell, and that it's not unusual for them to declare a project sold out once they reach a certain point and have another one already selling.

Florida's Timeshare and Vacation Clubs cancellation statute 721.10

721.10 Cancellation.—
(1) A purchaser has the right to cancel the contract until midnight of the 10th calendar day following whichever of the following days occurs later:
(a) The execution date; or

(b) The day on which the purchaser received the last of all documents required to be provided to him or her, including the notice required by s. 721.07(2)(d)2., if applicable.

This right of cancellation may not be waived by any purchaser or by any other person on behalf of the purchaser. Furthermore, no closing may occur until the cancellation period of the timeshare purchaser has expired. Any attempt to obtain a waiver of the cancellation right of the timeshare purchaser, or to hold a closing prior to the expiration of the cancellation period, is unlawful and such closing is voidable at the option of the purchaser for a period of 1 year after the expiration of the cancellation period. However, nothing in this section precludes the execution of documents in advance of closing for delivery after expiration of the cancellation period.

(2) Any notice of cancellation shall be considered given on the date postmarked if mailed, or when transmitted from the place of origin if telegraphed, so long as the notice is actually received by the developer or escrow agent. If given by means of a writing transmitted other than by mail or telegraph, the notice of cancellation shall be considered given at the time of delivery at the place of business of the developer.

(3) In the event of a timely preclosing cancellation, the developer shall honor the right of any purchaser to cancel the contract which granted the timeshare purchaser rights in and to the plan. Upon such cancellation, the developer shall refund to the purchaser the total amount of all payments made by the purchaser under the contract, reduced by the proportion of any contract benefits the purchaser has actually received under the contract prior to the effective date of the cancellation, as required by s. 721.06. Such refund shall be made within 20 days of demand therefor by the purchaser or within 5 days after receipt of funds from the purchaser’s cleared check, whichever is later.
