We've just bought our first batch of DVC points at Hilton Head. I noticed in the Member's Guidebook that it mentions the possibility of DVC members receiving discounts off the published rates at DVC resorts if they wished to pay cash. My questions are :

1. Do these discounts exist ?
2. How much are they ?
3. Are they available at any DVC resort or only your home ?
4. Are they only available when the owners inventory is full but Disney still has developer's inventory ?

Any other points I've missed.

Thanks

It is 25%. Are they there? Kind of like landing an AP discount, hard. But , I got one yesterday for the one day on our August trip that is a cash reservation. Saved $77.:earsboy:

Hi Cherimoya! I notice this is your first post so let me be the first to give you a big warm WELCOME to the DIS Board!!!

With regards to your questions, YES discounts do exist for you at ALL the DVC resorts (not just your home resort). The discount is 25% off the rack rate for that given room.

The supply of discounted rooms at each resort is quite limited. They come from owners inventory that are not being used because of trades out of DVC such as cruises and concierge collection. I am not sure if they use developers stock, but my feeling is that they do not (the small amount of developers stock in the sold out resorts is used for maintenance and rehab).

I have not ever tried to use this discount, but my feeling from other posts is that you should not count on getting one. If you do, GREAT! But as a general rule, they are a bit difficult to come by.

Hope this helps!

Funny thing. When we joined DVC in 1995, we were under the (false) assumption that we would always get the 25% members discount when paying cash for rooms at any DVC resort. In 1999 when we made cash reservations at HH, I found out that I had assumed wrong. I wasn't angry, just disappointed that I hadn't checked into this further. I thought that perhaps I didn't get the HH discount because OKW was my home resort.

Our first few trips to OKW used the "points on Sunday through Thursday" and "25% discounted cash on Friday and Saturday" method. When we purchased additional points through resale in 1999, we abandoned the cash on weekends method (not that there is anything wrong with that). Now I come to find that our 25% discount is hit-or-miss, so I'm glad that we have enough points to stay without having to pay cash.
