We have rented points a few times and would really like more information on buying DVC points. I called DVC for more information and was told that we have to wait until we get to DW to get any info. They are not allowed to tell me anything and are not allow to send their DVD to us. Last time we rented points we were thinking about it too but we can never get any info and our time in DW is limited so we really never want to do a presentation. We also have to young dd's who I think would get very bored. Since doing a presentation seems to be our only option I have a few questions?
1. Does DVC offer you anything if you do their presentation?
2. What does the presentation consist off and where are they located too? How do you keep your children occupied?
3. What is the earliest time they do presentations and how long are they?
4. If we decide to buy do we have to do it right than or can we wait til we get home?
5. How much taxes/closing cost included did it cost to by the min points at AKL?
6. If we buy "used" points can we do that from our home or does the same rules apply?
7. With "used"points is there a min? and is there a min of add on points we can but through DVC after?
8. Can we use our CN Visa to buy?
Thanks in advance for all the help!

I can't answer all of your questions - we did not go to a presentation. When we stayed at OKW they offered $100 to go to the presentation but we did not have time to fit it in.
You do not have to buy at the time - the process is very low pressure. I emailed them after we returned from our vacation and they sent the dvd & a packet of information. Everything was done by phone and mail after that.

We bought from DVC 160 points SSR & paid cash $124.80 closing costs. It is more (approx. double) if it is not a cash purchase (i.e. financed).
You can buy with a credit card (this is considered a "cash" purchase by DVC).

Unfortunately, I believe that in your case you do have to buy while in FL. Depending on your location in the US&Canada, there are legal issues (which I admit I do not fully understand) with DVC selling timeshares in your state/province/country.

You do have the option of doing the tour, and then buying resale ("used" points) when you get home. If you contact the Timeshare Store (link above) they may be able to help you with information and sales, as I believe they have solved the aforementioned legal issues.

All that being said...

We did the tour in October. It was very low pressure, and they gave us 2 cards w/ 3 uber-fastpasses (meaning insert get fastpass for right now) on each. These were nice but didn't help if all fastpasses were already issued for the day. They have a play area for kids, I think, and they give you free ice cream at the end.

I don't think they gave us any more info during the tour than we could get online. The pretty glossy book was nice, but all of it was more "sales" than information if that makes any sense.

WDW direct does take credit cards. Closing costs are $240-350 depending on whether you are financing. Resale does not take credit cards. Closing costs are $300-500 depending on size of contract. Both can arrange financing. WDW is about 10.75% regardless of loan term, Resale (through third party) is 9.95% on a 3-5 yr loan, 10.95% on a 6-10 yr loan. WDW direct takes little to no time to close, Resale takes 6 weeks. WDW direct requires a minimum purchase of 160 pts, resale can be as little as 25 pts depending on the contract.

You can find more information by asking questions here, or checking out these links (hopefully I am allowed to post this):

Hi,
If DVC can't send you a DVD....do you know someone who lives in the USA?
If so, have them call or go on line and order the DVC, DVD, and then they can forward it to you in Canada....That way you can watch it, etc....
Kinda using the back door....
Good Luck....

just so you know - Ontario is the only province they can sell in. although if you live in another province (as you do) you can still purchase you just have to do it while you are there.

i don't even know if they can send you information. but by all means call and ask

Hi

We also live in a part of Canada that we had to wait and buy when in Disney. We did alot of searching here about the program so when we did go to the presentation we were well informed when we got there. No pressure sales, very informative, its hard to guess how long it took maybe 30minutes.

Even though there is a well supervies play area, the kids stayed with us in the room (at the time ages 5 & 4) They were given crayons and pictures to color. They were content. (they are private rooms with only you and the guide)

We were given a lunch credit coupon ( a few years ago)

We took our info back to the room and decided to make another appoint to do the purchase. This appoint was maybe 45 mins. We did our deposit with visa and in the contract we set it up to pay the remainder with the same visa in 30days. This way if you need financing you can do it here at your own finacial institution.

The price per point is what you pay, no additional taxes on top. As for closing costs, we never paid any for our intial purchase or any add-ons through disney. Not sure what it is now.

The presentations are all day, everyday. Since they are individual sessions they can generally schedule it around your plans.

The whole process is very easy.

Good Luck

I was thinking it would take 3hours or more...30 minutes I could handle...lol...I thought you would have to do a tour than talk to someone...I liked how you went back to your room than made another apointment to purchase...that would give us a little more time to talk about it...

Thanks for the info...has anyone ever used there points to go anywhere besides Disney?

Thanks...

We haven't done it yet but we've been looking at Stowe VT for a trip next year.

i know there is a $75 transfer fee when you go to another hotel other then a disney resort so points plus $75 for 5 star hotels - very doable.

We had 2 kids, 1.5yo and 5yo with us during the presentation. This was at Anaheim so it may be different than at WDW. We were able to keep the kids in a big room with us, they brough a lil moble DVD player with movies, coloring books, toys, snacks. We sat on a couch and could look after them during the presentation. After 45mins the 1.5yo was running laps in the room and we cut the presentation short. We wanted more info, he gave us his phone number, called a few nights later and we were able to buy thru mail.

He still gave us a 50 dollar gift card to spend at Disneyland after we cut the meeting short and we still were able to get the incentives for 1st time buyers.

Very low pressure and very helpful. Not like other timeshare presentations... I was hesitant to check out DVC bases on bad past expriences with timeshares but DVC was well worth it, very helpful and friendly.

Okay…now I have more questions…
1. Is the fee per night? Or just to transfer the points needed for the trip?
2. Will you have to transfer all your points for the year or can you just transfer some?
3. Where do the 5star hotels come from? Is it Interval International?
4. About how many points are required for a 5 star resort outside of Disney?
The majority of our trips are to Florida and Disney and it will continue that way but occasionally we would like to go other places. It would be nice if we could transfer our points to stay at the Harbor Side Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas once…and maybe a nice resort in Hawaii. The main reason why DVC appeals so much to me is I enjoy staying at nicer Resorts when we go on vacation and it is something we would not do if we had to pay cash. We just cannot justify much more than $150 per night for a resort.

I would like to thank everyone for the quick responses and all the help...this is why I love DIS!:thumbsup2

Your links are very helpful! The 2 cards w/ 3 uber-fastpasses would be no use to us as we aren't going back to the parks after but I guess we aren't doing it to get something even though it is always nice!

$75.00 per trip, not per night. You do not have to transfer all of your points - just as many as it takes for that particular trip (though an exchange through interval international may take all of one year's points depending on how many you purchase & the location & time of year that you go - i.e. 160 points for a high season 1 bedroom)

Disney has exchange with select properties through interval international, club intrawest, and club cordial. Additionally, you can use points on a per night basis for hotels in the concierge collection http://dvc.disney.go.com/dvc/index?id=ProspectsConciergeCollectionOverviewPage.

Interval International Point Chart (7 night exchanges only):
1Bedroom
Low Season 124
Mid Season 144
High Season 160

2 Bedroom
Low Season 207
Mid Season 252
High Season 270

The other point charts are on Dis somewhere - they have different points for each property.

One thing to consider is that the actual "cost" per point, at least as we figured it (with the time value of money, lost interest, etc.), is somewhere around $11.00 per point per year (depending of course on variables such as how long you intend to own the points, purchase price, etc.). There are a lot of detailed cost analysis posts on DIS as well.
