I'm new to DVC so I'm just now starting to log in and check things out. My UY is Dec so I got my first batch of points on the 1st. The first thing I did was check availability 11 months out which would be Nov 1st 2016. When I select check in of Nov 1st it will give me a check out of Nov 8th, but won't let me select anything beyond that. It says elsewhere that the max stay is 14 days. Why can't I select more than 7 days at the exact opening of the 11 month window?

That's the DVC policy, you have to add a day at a time or wait and add the total hoping that there will be availability.

Another learning item not really talked about.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm thinking that adding a day at a time is the way to go rather than wait and hope for availability. I'm looking at a 10 day trip so it's only adding 3 days.

If you tie up the room at 11 months, nobody else can reserve that room out from under you. You'll only need to call once.

At exacty 11 months out, you can reserve a maximum of 7 nights. That is a limit when close to the booking window in that your current departure date from WDW can never be more than 11 months + 7 days from the date you are setting up the reservation. If, for example, you waited to reserve at 10 months out, you couild reserve more than a month at once. As to the two week limit, that is an online computer maximum for a reservation and not a DVC limit. The only llimit you actually have is that defined by the number of points you can use. You can call and make more than two week reservations subject to that 11 month out rule.

You know you actually had those points the day you signed on the dotted line and got your member number. In fact, you have all your points until the end of the contract, but you can only see the last year (if the points were banked), the current year and next year.

You don't have to wait until the first day of the UY to use them to book a stay. You could have booked at stay starting Dec 1, 2015 on January 1, 2015 if you owned it on that day.

Points need to be available for the dates of the reservation, not when you book the reservation.

please plan carefully when staying in November with a Dec UY. That is not an ideal scenario since your banking window closes July 31 so if you have to cancel after that you may have to scramble to avoid losing points. It's less risky to travel early in your UY (i.e. Dec and January trips with a Dec UY).

Good point.

Just how new of an owner are you OP? If you normally travel in November then as was mentioned the Dec UY won't be the best if you ever have a late cancellation. If you just bought within the last 10 days you might want to give consideration to getting a different UY.

@ace22 - @supersnoop is exactly right. If you book 7 nights starting on November 1st - November 8th, you have now "blocked" access to that same room until 11 months from November 8th. If you want to add 3 nights, just wait until December 6th or so, and call and add the three nights at once. No need to go through it 3 times.

Having trouble understanding this. If there is one room left and I book it starting on December 5th for 7 nights, the op can't book the 9th, correct?

You would have a different room since you both would be there on the 5th-7th. They would be in room "101" from the 1st to the 8th and you would have to be in "102" from the 5th - 12th. The room, "101", that the OP has reserved would not be available for anyone else to get into until the 8th which is why they don't have to call day by day and could even wait until the 7th if their check out day was the 8th to add the nights of the 8th & 9th.

Crap, all these years I have been adding each day! :guilty:

That's it exactly. That's why "walking" works, and why if you "walk" a reservation, you don't have to do it everday either. You're only risk would be if they for some reason pull some room inventory beyond 11 months, but I've never heard of this happening, though admittedly I've only been DVC for two years.

The good news @disneynutz is there's always stuff to learn. That's one reason I hang out on this board: I may feel that I know a lot, but it's clear I don't know it all! It's always a pleasure to learn something new.

Yup, I had to bust out a gantt chart and prove it to myself the first time I heard about it, and that was probably 9 months ago.

This made me laugh as I pictured you yelling to your Significant Other: "Honey, I'm busting out the Gannt Chart!!!":rotfl2:
