I have two little ones - 3 and 5 - so will be going to Disney a handful of times over the next few years, but I really like to explore new places. If we did the DVC I would like to do lots of trades and different resorts. Is this a good idea for us?
Thank you!

Probably not.

DVC is expensive - with only a few exceptions, it is not cost effective to use a DVC membership for trades or to stay at non-DVC resorts.

There are many less expensive timeshare options if exploring new places is your primary objective.

Best wishes -

Since DVC points will be best used to facilitate your need for Disney accomodations you need to give a little more detail on your WDW travel plans.

First off, You must prefer deluxe on-property accomodations for DVC to be a good choice. If that's not very important or you don't yet understand the value of those types of resorts then you're not a candidate for membership.

Now let's assume you do want to stay at the nicer WDW resorts and that a "few" means three years. If a "handful" for you is one or two trips DVC may not be right. If, however, it's five or six trips you really need to seriously consider it.

DVC is only a good deal to buy to use at the DVC resorts. IT IS NOT A GOOD DEAL to use for the other options. While DVC still may work for you for part of your travel plans, DO NOT buy it for the other options. You may consider buying less points then banking and borrowing to use every 2 or 3 years on average. You may want to look at other timeshares or other options for non DVC trips.

Specifically DVC is not a reasonable purchase if you are thinking about trading for other timeshares, using points at other Disney hotels, using points for DCL or using points for the Concierge collection hotels.

Agree with the others with one exception. It can be an okay trade for other WDW hotels. Okay because at your cost you may find the points equal to or better than AP codes at deluxe resorts. But you can not rely on that for the entire contract.

Many others will disagree with me, in part, because I use the cost of a point rather than the cash rental value of a point (which is much higher).

DVC is best used within the system where you get the most value for the dollar.

Consdiering what you have said about your situation, DVC may be good for a portion of your holiday plans. A small contract with DVC to go every other year or every third year might be a good choice using banking and borrowing rules to do this.
