I have been going back and forth on whether or not to to join the DVC. Does anyone know if it saves money when you use it for cruising? We will more than likely be spending more time on a cruise ship than at the parks (our first Disney cruise will be on the fantasy in September)

You can use DVC points to cruise, but it's not very economical to do so. You wind up using more points than you would cash. Pay for cruises with cash. Use DVC points for DVC stays. If you cruise more than you go to the parks, DVC membership isn't for you.

Historically you are lucky to get just a little more than your MF back. It would be much cheaper long term to buy far less points and pay cash for cruises. For sake of comparison and simplicity, compare buying 200 points resale at BLT to 400 points retail to use 200 per year for cruising on average. That's roughly 20K for the 200 resale points and 68000 for the 400 retail points. For the opportunity to trade DVC points for cruising (not guaranteed, the program could be canceled tomorrow) and get roughly $7.50 per point on average if lucky with dues of $5.05 per point. There was a recent example of $8.82 pp for next Summer, this is higher than most.
