I'm thinking of maybe trying something different on my upcoming trip and maybe stay at a DVC, instead of a Disney resort, but have some questions.

How does it work as far as renting points from someone versus booking directly through Disney?

If you book through Disney, is the same amount per night as it would be to rent the points from someone else?

If you purchase DVC points from someone, can you still add the dining plan to this reservation?

Is the reservation under your name or the person's you rented the points from?

Can you still get the DME if you rent from someone other than Disney?

How is the BCV? What about the WLV?

The main differences in renting DVC points is that there is no daily maid service, and it is a private agreement between you and the owner, Disney will not intervene if the deal goes sour.

The reservation will be in your name, but member services will not confirm the reservation, or talk to non-members for any other arrangements. The only thing you will receive is the written confirmation from the DVC owner.

The owner always can cancel the reservation at any time, even after you have paid for it, so have a well written contract and verifiable contact information, address, phone, etc.

The owner can add the DDP to the reservation for you, you pay for it when you check-in at the resort. The owner would also have to contact Member Services to add the Magical Express for you (it is free, just like a non-DVC resort).

Unlike booking through Disney, the DDP is not a "package", you may purchase your park tickets wherever you wish.

There are risks to renting, for both the owner and the renter. Usually owners have a no refund policy in the event of a cancellation..again everything is negotiable through private contract with the DVC owner. Generally, renting points can be a substantial savings over booking cash through Disney for a DVC resort. It depends upon the individual if the savings outweighs any risk involved.
