DVC Availability Tools

With recent issues checking availability at times for DVC through the DVC website, I've been using this DVC Availability Tool when it is down. Now I've seen people say before it is only as good as how often it gets updated so understand that, but it works when the regular DVC site is down and I don't feel like refreshing the seven dwarves page.

I've also recently tried a free trial of Unlocked Magic which in itself is alright although seems a bit confusing trying to mesh forum style with Facebook feed style, but they have an availability tool as well and it is not only showing if there is availability but also the number of rooms left.

I'm a bit of a nerd and figured that the DVC Availability Tool uses some sort of web scraper to gather the info (whether that's technically legal or not who knows), but how would Unlocked Magic be able to have the actual number of rooms left even? I can't find that anywhere on the regular DVC site even for us members.

Do you think this is an actual accurate number and if so how are they getting by doing this? Either way, I'll probably cancel my free trial and stick with the DVC Availability tool as it doesn't add that much value to me, just wondering how they're doing it.

The number of rooms available is not plainly displayed on the DVC site, but apparently there have long been methods for mining the data. It's unfortunate that someone has decided to exploit that for profit.

Wow, the DVC Field Guide seems like a great resource as well and one I just bookmarked! Love all the historical data it shows.

I would think Disney would shut down these scraping tools, but maybe they have enough issues just keeping their site functioning for members.

100% agree.

If you inspect the data that DVC pushes back it is easily seen what the availability and count of each room is at a resort. There was a thread on here at some point that details how to do it. It is rather easy you just need to inspect the source of the webpage and all the data is there in a nice little structure easy to read.

Interesting, I searched for the thread and couldn't find it but played around with the inspect feature of chrome on the DVC website for a while trying to figure it out. I'm more of an Excel nerd so couldn't figure it out but would be pretty cool to see.
