At BCV last week (which was AWESOME!!!), a Cm told me that a new DVC is in the works at Fort Wilderness... in cabin style lodging. Anyone hear of this? What's the scoop?

I know you can use points on the cabins that already exist in Fort Wilderness.
Was this person hinting of a new build?

I would like to stay at Fort Wilderness if they opened up River Country again.

Its consistent with the STOL rumor.

I'll go you one better, what's "STOL"?

STOL="Short Take-Off and Landing".

It's the short airstrip over near the monorail and not too far from the TTC. It's the old runway used by Disney executives when they flew in and out of WDW.

It has not been used for years.

There's been rumors that DVC might build a resort there, and connect it to the monorail by adding a loading station.

A STOL runway is by definition shorter, and possibly with obstructions at one end or even both ends, such as trees, power lines, etc.

To fly into and out of a STOL airstrip, the aircraft must be capable of STOL performance. This generally means it's capable of a high rate of climb (so it can clear obstacles), doesn't need a long runway to get airborne, and has a slow landing speed (so it can get on the ground and stop before running off the end of the runway.

Hope this helps.

Although I've never heard of it, I'd love the idea!

Yes, yes it does. Thanks very much!

Caskbill pretty much covered it. Some diagrams I've seen show it having its own waterway connecting through Ft Wilderness.

I haven't heard of the FW rumor. However we stayed in the cabins this past Feb. and really enjoyed them and the campground. I'd love to see them added to the DVC point list. We paid cash with an AP rate. The cabin was smaller than a DVC one-bedroom and did not have a laundry, but other than that it was great to have the kithchen, living room plus seprate bedroom.

There has been talk of this on the camping board for a few months now. Rumor over there is that they are expanding the campground and building a new DVC. I could certainly see converting the cabins to DVC--they would just need to upgrade the pools (which I think is on the table anyway). Everything over there is set up for a home-away-from-home experience (groceries, good marina and bike rentals, plenty of eateries) so I think it would be a good fit. I bet the occupancy of the cabins would be higher if they were DVC.

I wonder if Disney is wanting to add a DVC option to every resort.

It seems to be heading that way (not that anything is wrong with that),

please one on the monrail first - would like either Polyn or Cont (this one may actually be).

I didn't think that lately FW had trouble filling those cabins. they seem to be pretty popular.

I would be soooooo there if this happened.

I spent my first 15 trips and most of my childhood there. If they opened River Country too, well, that might push me over the edge.:rotfl:

I will be keeping my fingers crossed on this one!!!!

uh uh, no no...this would mean that i could no longer use my points if/when i choose to, on an RV site at FtW. Plus, it would ruin the quiet atmosphere at the Fort. Let's hope this gets back-burnered!!! :sad2:

They are on the point list just like the Poly, CR, GF etc. It would be nice to see them as actual DVC units as the points would probably be less per night.
If they reopened River Country as the DVC pool area it would be really great.

I loved the Cabins at Fort Wilderness, BUT I HATED the transportation over there . Getting on one bus transferring to another , before even leaving the campground uuggghhhh!!!!
