We are looking at DVC...I would like to know what other Canadian DVC members have to say. Any advice for us, we are going to be buying resale. Being from Newfoundland we can only purchase at WDW through Disney direct. Resale is much cheeper and we are only looking for the shorter contract end date!:cool1:

We bought through Disney, but mainly because we wanted BLT and it wasn't any less expensive to go resale. I would suggest that you buy where you want to stay as opposed to what the end date is. These contracts can be willed to family members, or if the membership is no longer useful then you can resell it. Because you get 4 months advance booking at your home resort buying where you want to stay is critical, especially for early December when most DVC rooms get booked even though it is low season in cash rooms at the parks.

As a Canadian there is really no difference that I "feel" compared to an American. You can get tons of information on the DVC boards here too so I encourage you to use that info before making a final decision. Good luck!

After many years of paying $300-$400.00 a night for hotel rooms we finally looked into DVC. Best move ever. We have 2 small contracts.100 at VWL and 75 at BCV. As we love both resorts, we can book at 11 months out during the prime seasons as we tend to go in December. We bought our contracts through resale also. If you plan on going to Disney every 2 years, it is worth it. It is a buyers market right now so explore all the resale companies listings, find out what home resort you want and negotiate. Good Luck!!

We purchased in 2004 and are so happy with our decision :cool1:
We are looking to add on through resale too!
Good luck!

We are leaning towards VWL we just love this resort:love:....there is not a lot on the market I guess it is due to the size. Is it hard to get reservations at VWL?

Since I go at Christmas or right before, I always book at the 11 month window and have never had a problem

We are newer members (since 2007) But it was an amazing choice for us as well.

Our first vacation with DVC (thanks to some clever baking and borrowing) was a 2 week stay where we invited some family.

Since then we tend to go almost once a year. Not to mention earlier this summer I found I had the opportunity to to to LA this Nov. A quick call to DVC and I got a studio at Disneyland for a few days.

The only advice I would give would be what the others have been saying. Book where you want to stay. Even if right now you go during "slower" seasons, you never know when you may change plans and go at a busier time. And then you can take advantage of you 11 month booking window.

Members since 2004.. never had a problem getting any resort at 7months. Even got AKV Value 1BRs for our March trip. Don't regret it at all. Love leaving the resort and having a $0 resort bill. ;)

We have been members since 2002. Our first and second contract was direct through Disney. A couple of years later we purchased through resale. And then again, a few years later we purchased through Disney.

To be honest, although the resale route seemed to go smoothly. I was quite nervous about it.

I found it much easier to call my guide before or just after we arrive on our trip and make an appointment to meet with him. I understand fully not being able to purchase from home. When we first purchased, we lived in Ontario and we were able to go back home and think about it and call our guide to purchase.

Now that our province doesn't allow such transactions, we need to be physically at Disney to purchase. We go to Disney for 2 weeks every 6 months so it's not too bad. Although, our last contract was AKV and we missed out on getting our names on the tapestry because the offer ended before our vacation. I was upset and my guide felt bad but he couldn't do anything about it.

By the way, before we purchased, we went for a week once or twice a year. After we made our first purchase we went over a week once a year. Then we purchased more points and we started going for 2 weeks. Now after almost 9 years as DVC members, we go 2 weeks each time twice a year....that's 4 weeks a year :banana:. If it wasn't for our points, we would not be able to go as often. Even with the Disney discounts and promotions, it still would cost us more.

However, you do have to take into account the maintenance/annual fee. Some resorts are less than others. I should caution you that just because it's lower now, it's not always necessarily going to be the case in the future.

So my suggestion is to purchase where you want to stay since in a lot of cases, Home resort priority could be a very important asset. And seasons are different as well. For instance, VWL is very busy at Christmas and BCV and BWV are popular during the Food and Wine Festival...etc. But I think that many have said that it's alway best to purchase where you want to stay and you can always try for the other resorts at 7 mths prior if you want.

Good Luck.:)

Happy DVCers here. Bought resale through the Timeshare Store. We have a small contract - we generally do a couple days at another WDW resort (always on a discounted rate ;) )then the balance at OKW - our home resort which we love. Only real advice is try to buy where you want to stay. Not a big problem for us as OKW is pretty big, but if you want Wilderness lodge or Beach Club around Christmas, you really want the 11 month booking window to be safe. I know many don't seem to have problems, but you certainly see complaints on the DVC boards here on the DIS about people unable to get all their nights during a busy time (Christmas, Easter and American Thanksgiving).

Ok, maybe two more pieces of advice. First, if you are looking for a small contract you may want to contact one of the resale agents and let them know what you are looking for. Sometimes the small contracts can get snapped up and not actually hit the agency website. I know we did this, and when our contract showed up on their website it already indicated there was a sale pending (Us!).

Second, check out the ROFR thread on the DVC boards here which show the prices of actual resales as well as whether the contract made it past ROFR (Disney's right of first refusal - where a contract is resold, Disney is allowed to purchase it at the offer price). You will find the prices tend to be lower than asking prices so you can get an idea of what price to offer at.

Good luck on your purchase!

Also bought in 2007
best move ever !! the only regret ??? not buying into DVC a few years back ..:):thumbsup2
:)

We have been DVCers since 1998. We wish we bought in 92! We originally had 170 points at Boardwalk but we added 110 at Saratoga and 3 years ago we added 250 for Saratoga bringing our total to 530. The only disadvantage are the dues, they go up the more points you buy. The 250 points we bought on the DVC MEMBER CRUISE because they also took 6 dollars off a point and gave us a MEMBER CRUISE for the following year with a balcony. You have to remember your in it for the LONGTERM. We roughly figured it out and after your 10th year including dues, your getting more for your money than you originally paid. Up until then if you paid $20000 dollars roughly your still paying more for that room then what you would have paid before you joined. Being a member of DVC allows you to get %25 off the rates of Disney resorts if you pay cash. We used to go every 2 or 3 years when kids were growing up. Now we go 3 or 4 times a year ranging from 10 days down to 4 or 5 days. We rarely stay at our Home resort. We usually stay at OKW resort. Sometimes we plan a 5 night stay Sunday nite thru Thurs nite the rates are lower. If we stay Fri or Sat we might pay cash. It is more points on those 2 nights but its the same price for cash for all 7 nights, plus we get %25 off. Once you buy into it DVC will do all your booking if it involves DISNEY. We really love it. Ive met some special Disney people on the member cruises. Marty Sklar, Ducky Williams, Bill Farmer(voice of Goofy), All 3 leading ladies from Disneys Broadway Musicals including Mary Poppins and Lion King. What im saying is they invite special guests on their cruises they have once a year, they entertain or do talks but before and after they are like regular cruisers just like you. They will chat with you.
