No.
If you RENEW your AP, the new AP date starts the day the old AL expired, no matter how you renew. If you renew by phone or online, you get a voucher (real or virtual) that must be exchange for a live AP. No matter when you exchange that voucher, the new AP will be dated according to when the old AP expires/expired.
What is confusing in this thread is that people are talking about 2 different things. Some are talking about taking advantage of the renewal discount. This renewal (whether done in person to get a live AP or remotely to get a voucher/confirmation number) can only be done 30 days on either side of the existing AP expiration date. If you renew remotely, no matter when you activate the renewal, it will be dated according to the AP that was renewed.
Other people are talking about buying new AP vouchers ahead of time and saving them. This is done for a couple of reasons - some do it to spread out their expenditures over time. But the reason more relevant to this thread is that some buy new AP vouchers (not renewals) to lock in the current price, knowing that a price increase will likely come in August. These vouchers for new APs can be used at any time and the AP obtained with them is not backdated at all - its use year starts the day the voucher is redeemed.
For many, renewal isn't as good a deal given the way trips can be spaced out. By pre-purchasing vouchers at the current price, it's a way to shave a little bit of cost off an AP that will be activated AFTER the rate increase.
