When you purchase an annual pass is it like regular tickets and starts the first day you use it?

For NEW Annual Passes, you have to stop at either a Park Ticket Window or Guest Relations Location at WDW to activate your pass. The year begins upon activation even if you never enter a park.
For RENEWALS, your expiration date is extended by one calendar year.
