I am flying from Orlando to Halifax, with a stopover in Montreal. Where do I buy my duty free? Orlando? Montreal? If it's Orlando, how do I handle the "no liquids" issue on the Montreal to Halifax leg of the trip?

Given Orlando-Montreal-Halifax flights, at least in theory you would only be able to buy Duty Free goods in Orlando. (You must present a boarding pass that indicates you are crossing an international border on your flight before you can purchase Duty Free).

I am not sure that you will be able to purchase anything liquid at the Duty Free shop in Orlando, given that yours is not a direct flight. I have witnessed the Duty Free shop in Montreal refuse to allow an international passenger with a boarding pass to purchase liquids (sunscreen in this case) because the passenger was taking a connecting flight and had no way to put Duty Free liquids into her checked luggage.

I have always operated on the theory that I couldn't purchase Duty Free liquids unless flying home direct from the U.S.

I had a connecting flight that layed over in London and then continued on to Cairo and people were being told to throw out their perfume and liquor. I wouldn't try to buy anything liquid for sure. I'm not sure about non liquids.

You purchase in Orlando and when you get to Montreal you have to put it in your checked bags. Never had a problem with this, except once, had a bottle broke, but I don't think it happened until it arrived in Halifax.

Dennise is correct but guessing the issue is that you won't get your checked bags if the airline is the same. I flew Miami, Toronto, Ottawa and I never got my bags in Toronto as it was all Air Canada and I could not buy duty free in Miami as I had nowhere to put it to fly Toronto to Ottawa. You must be liquid free to board your last flight. For this reason, I often look for a US connection now if I want to bring home duty free.

We have done this route twice and both times had to go through customs as. Itwasourfirst stop in Canada. This is when we put our duty free in our checked luggage. You have to get your luggage and go through customs and security.
