dumb question!!

Just got back from Mexico, got loads of pictures with the XT and generally very happy! However I am also kicking myself for the number of times I forgot to change the ISO. My biggest blunder was one morning's sunny beach pictures were all taken with ISO 1600 from previous night's show!!! Does anyone have a good way to remind oneself?

Check it before every scene change.
Many people have mentioned they wished for an ISO display in the viewfinder.
Get used to hitting the ISO button often. But soon you will notice the shutter speed does not look right for the available light.

You can put a little round felt/velcro sticker in the back of the camera where your thumb would be... this way when picking up the camera, it would be a physical reminder to check your ISO, WB and other settings.

How about using the Histogram review instead of the full screen(lcd) image.
You get to see most of the settings.

But sometimes I dont review at all, one should have an IDEA of what the shutter speed should be like. So if the shutter is hitting 1/4000th or more, there may be something off.

did the same thing a few weeks ago and might try this...since when seeing an odd shutter i just think "hmm that's odd" and politely go about my 1/2 baked agenda. i also got a delkin lcd screen shade but now i can't see the histogram unless i flip up the shade which is a pain all the time...i do think it's a matter of slowing down though and difficult for me ,thinking before i shoot...i am determined to do that this trip though.

Gee, I did the same dumb thing and could have kicked myself! Of course I happened to do it on my only day at AK-everything was shot in 800 iso. It was a very overcast day so they came out okay but, I haven't printed them yet. I am so bummed because I REALLY wanted all the shots I took of Devine to come out perfectly. Oh well live and learn I guess! You can be sure I didn't do it for the rest of the trip!

i'll second the histogram view. not only is this the best way to ensure your images are exposed properly, it gives you data regarding the shot that will instantly remind you to change, should you still be on high ISO.

and if you do shoot at high ISO, use a good noise reduction app like noiseware and you'll be ok.

I don't have any easy answers but it will come with experience. When you get used to looking at the shutter speed and aperture settings in the viewfinder you will quickly see if they look out of sorts.

An aperture of f22 with a shutter speed of 1/4000 is a good sign that the ISO is higher than required. One of the biggest complaints about Canon's SLRs is that they do not show the ISO in the viewfinder.

Hi Sue!

Just chiming in...I just got back from the Disney Magic , and I made some major ISO blunders. Set it way too high in dining room - doh!

My pics were not as "Wow!" as I'd hoped; any time I ventured away from automatic, things didn't seem to work out too well. Ah well, practice, practice, practice!

(I'm still having lots of trouble with faces being too dark/shadowed...)

Hope your cruise was "Magical", I'll have to wait till next April for my "Wonderful" days !

I had lots of bright sun/dark shadows too. I used Picasa "fill light" alot, and the 4x6s look fine for my photo album.

yeah, i could put all sorts of post it arrow warnings of all the things i forget to check... WB, ISO, my personal biggest boo boo EXPosure... but then i couldn't see the camera and i'd rustle in the breeze from all the paper
maybe someday....
