This might seem like a dumb question, but I'm completely clueless with this stuff!!

I was casually browsing the other day and found a really great dress. Only problem was it was a size 26 I think.

I am generally a size 2 or 4.

Is it safe to say that any dress can be altered to a smaller size?

Thanks! :)

I'm no seamstress so I'm not really sure, but I would think that great a size difference would be like making the dress over again.

I've heard they can alter things one or two sizes, and probably more, but 10+ sizes is like making a whole new dress.

Contact a local seamstress and ask for their opinion.

Wedding dresses generally run a size smaller, but any more than 4 or so sizes off, and I doubt the cut would be feasible. All the proportions would be a little too off. The details would likely get lost with all the recutting. I definitely second getting a seamstress' opinion, though.

I was told by my seamstress that a dress shouldn't be taken in more than 2 dress sizes otherwise it messes up the design of the gown and will look odd.:thumbsup2

Thank you all for your replies!:flower3:

This is very good information. I didn't even realize that wedding dresses are sized much smaller....see how clueless I am?? I'd be at least a size 4.

Darn it, it was a beautiful dress :guilty: Oh well, serves me right for starting to look too early in advance!!

My dress was two sizes too big when i bought it, and then I lost two more sizes. The seamstress really struggled to take it in and keep the integrity of the dress.

poohbear,

I am usually a 0 or a 2. Every once in a while a 4. My dress was a 6. In some styles I was an 8. In one dress, I wore a 10. There was no way I was fitting in anything smaller than a 6, so be prepared. It was a very odd experience for me but I am blessed with very high metabolism.

My BF asked why they make the sizes run like that. I think it is odd. You would think they would make them the opposite way...

as for your origional question, I don't think there is any way they could make that dress fit and look correct. Do have have the maker and the style number or name? Perhaps you can find it in the correct size or have it ordered?

Good luck!

I'm just super excited that they make pretty dresses for us big girls. :thumbsup2 I'm always worried that I'll have to wear a white sack.
