Im wondering if me wanting to go to Disney is a stupid idea?

Im 19 yr old college student in Louisville Ky... Since im a college student im sure you all know money is tight.. Anyway I haven't been on vacation in over two years.. My last vacation was with a friend and her mom. We went to florida for two weeks (and didnt even go to disney :confused3 )..

I havent been to disney in over 4 years! Me and my family used to go to Disney EVERY SINGLE year.. when I was 16 my parents got a divorce so that stoped our trips.. lol

I have been to Disney World 15 times (13 summer and 2 christmas)
and Disneyland twice. (both summer)

So when all that stoped when I was 15 it was kinda depressing! I really miss disney.. the theme parks.. the resorts.. the whole excitment all year long before your trip!..

Me and my boyfriend of two years decided we were going to take our first trip next summer to florida.. we were just going to stay at the beach for a week and thats it..

But then yesterday I was watching some old video tapes of when I was at Disney and I was thinking how much I really missed going there!

I was thinking about just getting a 5 day hopper.. and staying 6 nights at Port Orleans Riverside..

I know thats alot of money (for someone my age) but I think I can manage to save all the money for the trip by May..

But is it stupid for me as a 20 yr old college student to save all that money and waste it on a trip to Disney World? I already told a few people and they seem really confused why I would want to go to Disney World.. I don't know..

Im confused weither to go ahead and startsaving for this trip and plan the whole thing or just not do it..

Because I just feel really stupid being 20 years old and wanting to go to Disney World :worried:

:sunny: It's not stupid if that's what you enjoy and have fond memories from the past with your family. Some of my kids are around your age and they LOVE Disney, 2 of my daughters just returned from there. The only thing that would make it "stupid" is if you really can't afford it and need to live off the money you are saving or if you need to save for college or a car or something like that. If you do decide you can afford it just spend wisely and go during a value season if that's possible and try POP or All Star as opposed to a moderate (POR). Good Luck deciding! :sunny: :flower:

Don't feel stupid! When I was 21 three friends and I went to Disney World for our Spring Break! I'm from FL, one from LA, and one had done the CP - we had a blast. Stayed at Coronado Springs. We went to school in New Orleans, so Disney was actually a great break from a party atmosphere. Just tell people you need some family friendly time!

You never grow out of Disney. I enjoyed it as much (possibly more) than my four year old. Once you get a good dose of pixie dust, it's with you to stay! You can do it on a very tight budget. Stay at a budget resort like All Stars or POP, pack a lot of snacks for the parks so you don't have to eat much there. As a college student though, the only money I would shell out if is for the Plus Package for Pleasure Island. It's so worth it for young people.

Awww, I just turned 49 and i still wanna go to Disney World! :earboy2: If that's where you want to go and you can save up the money, then go. You have the right to spend your money any way you want. One persons "waste' is another one's "treasure".

Cathy--most recent trip in Jan '05, no kids, just DH & me...

I don't think you are stupid for wanting to go but I think you should look at doing it as cheaply as possible.

If you are driving, get a condo through skyaution for a week at about $250 and then get tickets, and eat at the condo in the am and some nights. You might just have enough money to get a second week at the beach...

Do it, but do it smart...If not off-site, then at a value..

I would have killed for a trip to Disney when I was 20... :wizard:

I think a lot of kids go through the "I'm too old for Disney" stage. But eventually, (when they are even older) they realize that You Are Never Too Old for Disney (or YANTOD). You just may have either skipped this stage entirely or just came out the other side of the "I'm too cool for this" tunnel earlier than some. Either Way, It's NOT Stupid.

Welcome to adulthood, and enjoy your trip to...
The Most Magical Place on Earth!

I don't think it's stupid at all! I'm 44yo and always game for a trip to WDW. Guess I never quite grew up, which is really no surprise to those who know me. ;)

I would plan to do it as cheaply as possible, whether that means an offsite place or a value resort. Or if you're really set on Riverside you could stay 4 nights at Pop Century or offsite and then 3 nights at Riverside.

There are a lot of things I put off doing because we didn't have the money and once we had kids I kicked myself for not doing when it would have been so much easier and cheaper (New York City, for example).

Only you know if it's a wise thing to do based on your situation. Good luck deciding!

Definitely not stupid. I think it's great and you will not regret it. No, it's not stupid to save up money for a vacation. That's what vacations are for. Where you take them is your business.

As for the people who don't understand why you're going to Disney, they don't get the magic. They haven't had pixie dust in their lives yet. We get that reaction all the time because we go alot and we're in our early 40s with no kids at home. We usually get "you're going again? why?" The answer is simple - because we can and we want to.

Go for it and don't worry about what other people think. It's your life, not theirs.

I don't think it's a stupid idea at all. I went to DW with my family when I was 14 - our one and only trip. I didn't remember much of it, so when I got married we just decided we would take a vacation at DW once we had kids. I mean, DW is only for kids right? WRONG!!! We took our DD for her first trip last year and even though we had a lot of "kid" fun, I just kept thinking to myself how I will always regret not going to DW with just my DH.

If you truly love DW, the best thing you can do is to enjoy it now while you are young. (NOT that you wouldn't enjoy it when you are older!) What I mean to say is that I wish I could spend a carefree vacation there going on any and all the grownup rides as many times as I wanted, going to PI to party, staying out late etc. At your age, you still have plenty of time to enjoy DW by yourself so go for it!!!

What most "non-believers" don't realize is that WDW is not all Dumbo & Small World. There are great things for kids of all ages (that includes kids at heart.) Mission: Space, Soarin', Tower of Terror, Festival of the Lion King... There are plenty of things us "big" (college) kids can enjoy. If Disney had nothing to offer college students, there would be no Disney College Program (a big draw at my school each semester.)

Don't worry about nay sayers, they don't know what they're missing. Go and have a great time.

Life is not a dress rehearsal, my friend. Go for it.

As a 30-something, it brings me much joy to see that 19-year olds still want to spend their time and money on a trip to somewhere like WDW, and not just getting wasted on the beach somewhere and hooking up with the next so and so. ENJOY!

I completely hear ya! I'll be 22 when I go to Disneyworld in June on my honeymoon. That will be two weeks after graduation and a day after we get married, which means that's when I have to start paying off college loans and being responsible when it comes to money. I've been to Disney probably eight times, and my fiancee went with my family two years ago. In all practicality it would end up being a lot cheaper to find some all-inclusive resort that will be really romantic and relaxing. But we decided Disney was for us! We know that because of money issues it is going to be several years before we will get to go on another "real" vacation, so we're just going to save up as much as we can and make sure it's enough for Disney. We lucked out in that we will be staying at a timeshare that my parents own, and then we are going to stay three nights at a moderate (Coronado Springs?). When I tell people we're going to Disney World for our honeymoon they think we're crazy, and so sometimes I feel a little stupid. But I know we'll have fun, and it will be something we'll never forget!

You all made me feel alot better! lol :earboy2:

You guys are right about it being alot cheaper to stay at one of the value resorts as apposed to a moderate.

But I used to love Dixie Landings! It was my favorite resort. I guess I have time to decide.. the price difference would be 300-400 more then if I stayed at a value resort. We stayed at one of the All star resorts one year and I didn't like it at all :(

I have time to decide.. and it will just be me and my boyfriend..

But when do you guys think everything will already be booked? how much time do I have? lol

I was planning for July 1st - July 7th

I think you just know about Disney's best attraction... its magic! :wizard: People who haven't been exposed to it, do not know what they are missing. I think they just think of WDW as a theme park and not the most magical place in the world!

As a child, I had only been to Disney once. It was all the way back in 1981. Earlier this year, my best childhood friend suggested that we take our kids to Disney. I said okay, but didn't think much about it. She lives in Tampa and my two DSs and I were flying down to celebrate her oldest DS's birthday. Well, one day in the MK and now I am a Disney addict. I have spent the last 8 months planning our first family vacation to WDW and I am so excited! DH hasn't caught my enthusiasm yet, but I suspect that once he is there he will experience the magic, too, and love it as much as me!

If you have found your place in the world where your heart is filled with joy consider yourself one of the lucky ones and go for it!

P.S. My parents divorced when I was 15. It was at the end of my freshman year of high school. Just awful timing. But I can tell you now, that I have never been happier! I have been happily married for 9 years and have the two most beautiful children ever. If heading to WDW helps to give you control over your own happiness, then do it! Lot of luck! ::MinnieMo

I'm 21 and me and my fiance have been going to DIsney for the past 5 years. We always stay two weeks and plan for the whole year. We love it. I dont think it is stupid at all. DIsney is also very adult oriented although many people fail to realize this. Alot of people at work and my family dont "get" why we go but oh well. We have a great time anyways and are now planning our Disney wedding. I say go and have a great time!! :teeth:

I went to Disneyworld when I graduated from college. I was 21.

Have fun!!!!!

I think that after you are on these boards for awhile that you will find that many, many of these Disney obsessed folks are WELL over the age of 20.....Why would you feel stupid about wanting to go to a place that is so magical?? Save your money..do it as inexpensively as you can ( college students are really good at budgeting!) you will not regret it.

I take my Dfamily every year-two times a year. We love it. And I have gone by myself at 46 years old. I had a ball-just like I was a kid. You and your DBF will have a great time. I wish I had gone when I was 20-21. Pleasure Island looks like a paradise for the younger crowd. Can't stay awake for clubs anymore...how sad.....

Not stupid at all. I went to WDW as a 21 yr old broke college student for my first trip, and have been going back ever since. I love disney, we do charector eating, i get as excited as 5yr old when i see cinderella, fantasyland rocks, and i love getting autographs. It's not silly or a waste. I would much rather spend $ on a good quality disney vacation instead of giong to the beach and blowing money on silly stuff like clubs, drinks, parties.

I saved for 10 months a little at a time and sacraficed alot of spending money throughout the year, but in the end it was so worth it. You sound like you need a much deserved break. I also did things like using my money i got back from taxes put immediately into the wdw fund (don't know if you work or not), the money i got from selling books back into the fund, collecting my spare change, etc. The mods are great resorts, but the values are cute and have that exceptional disney service we all love and expect, so you may want to check out that option to stretch your disney $ further.

Not studpid at all. Most of your other college friend won't understand your not wanting to go to the beach and PARTY. They think they have to Party it up and act stupid to have fun. You have found the real thing. You can have fun and fulfill you hearts desire with a trip to WDW. DOes your Boyfriend want to go? If so you have found a soul mate. Go for it and have a great time :flower:
