Ducks in BCV Quiet Pool

Yep. "A fed animal is a dead animal."

To give you an example, I was out in the heart of the Everglades in an airboat on Monday. In an area where commercial airboat tours operate, I spotted a medium-sized alligator (8-9 feet) sunning on the bank of a canal. As soon as I got close, he came into the water and swam right up to the boat (within 1 foot). He'd obviously been fed because alligators usually flee airboats.

A little further down the canal, we came upon a mother alligator with babies. The babies did the same thing -- swam to within inches of the boat. Again, that just doesn't happen in the wild.

And just a few yards further, I stopped because I spotted a Purple Gallinule in the bushes. Birders know Purple Gallinules as incredibly beautiful, but very shy, birds.

Gallinules walk on top of water plants, and that darn bird walked right over to the boat. He was soon joined by another gallinule, and then they both jumped onto our airboat! We had to chase them away.

I had a whole load of rangers on the boat, so we obviously were not feeding the wildlife. But somebody is.

I'd be willing to bet that within a few months, we'll have to go back out there and destroy that adult alligator because it has gotten too aggressive and has become a threat...all because people fed it to get a picture that was easy to get without feeding the animal. It won't be the first fed animal to be destroyed, and it won't be the last.

And that's just sad! :(

HUMANS SWIMMING IN OUR FRESHWATER LAKES!!

And that would be an important difference between alligators and ducks. If a similar item appeared on an alligator website, it would be like a party invitation:

"Humans swimming in our lakes...WOO HOO!!! Game on!"

We love SAB, but my kids have a "no heads underwater" rule in the shallow pool where the water is petri-dish warm and the ducks and diapered babies are plentiful and roam free. I don't even want to think about what's in that water.

Ducks in deeper, colder pools don't worry me as much.

:rotfl2: Oh yes!! I agree! Cold diluted duck poo is always better than the warmer concentrated version!:lmao: And realistically, the only thing those swim diapers do is contain the "floaters"!:rotfl:

Along with the duck and kiddie poo is a whole slew of chemicles. As far as I know no one has gotten any serious illness from the pools or hot tubs. Of course that won't help the GROSS FACTOR..

And there's always at least one parent happily relaxing by the pool while their toddler drinks the water out of a sand bucket. The year my son was two, my husband and I debated taking him to Whitewater on Saturday (in Atlanta) and the exact day we were going to go ended up being the day all the little kids got sick/died from contamination in the shallow kiddie area:sad1: - I'd have never thought pool water could be dangerous before that. (Whitewater now has a lifeguard-enforced no-head-underwater) policy in all their pools.

SAB is fabulous for active, strong swimming, older kids that can be trusted in the water and given freedom to swim independently. I'd have lost my sanity in there trying to manage two preschoolers without losing one or having them do that new-swimmer open-mouth water-swallowing swim.

I think one great thing about DVC is that there are pools for all stages of a family.
Got babies and/or little kids that don't swim well or are fearful of water?
SSR has a large zero-depth area set apart from the rowdy part of the pool, a gentle toddler-friendly water-play area, and a baby slide.

Got slightly older kids that are just getting their "sea-legs"?
AKV has zero-entry again but with a mild themed slide - Kidani's water play area looks like it will be a "rowdy area" perfect for elementary aged kids. The pool does not have a real "deep end".

Got kids that swim but are too young to be out of your sight at a pool? BWV is a good middle-of-the-road pool. Not too big, not too deep, a long slide - but one that's not very fast. You can see the whole pool from any place you sit around the pool.

Got strong-swimming kids? OKW's pool slide is FAST, a little scary cause you can't see what's coming next, and the water is over-your-head-deep in places.

Got trustworthy tween kids ready for some freedom? Turn them lose at SAB and tell them to report back to you every half-hour. They'll feel like kings/queens of the world with their own mini-water-park and they won't be bored. You can read that book you brought on vacation. :cloud9:

Don't have kids and don't want to feel mobbed by hoardes of them? The quiet pool at VWL is a romantic oasis that feels like it's in a different world.
