DTaP Shot Reaction Question

DS had his 3rd DTaP vaccination on Friday afternoon. He was fine all day Saturday but Saturday night he became very cranky and would not sleep. By early Sunday morning he was running a fever of 101.5 and he is still running a fever this morning although he did sleep a little last night.

Is this a normal reaction to the shot? The information I was given said that fever was a possible reaction but would the fever not start until Sunday if it was the shot? I figured it would happen within 24 hours if it was shot related.

He also has a little bit of a runny nose and a cough plus it seems like maybe his throat is a little sore (his voice sounds hoarse) so maybe the fever is related to a cold rather than the shot?

I would expect it to be more about the cold than the shot. Seems like they usually get a temp the same day if any from a shot.

This reaction may be from the shot. Most children don't have severe reactions, but parents should be aware of what to look for. And if this is a shot reaction, it should be noted for future reference in your child's medical record. Also, children may react differently to different shots. Each vaccine vial is numbered in case there is a batch that is causing problems.

Did you get any other shots at this time? If so, don't rule them out either.

From what I've read, a reaction is possible any time within a period of a few weeks. But some are more likely to have a reaction right away and others are likely to have them later. I'd call the doctor to see about this particular shot.

It also sounds like this horrible virus that is running rampant through many cities. Sore throat, cough, runny nose and fever are the symptoms of this virus. Call your Dr. and see what they say.
