DST- Turn back your clocks, but why?

I never really understood what exactly Daylight Savings Time is. I remember when I was younger it was explained to me as initially being started because the majority of the industry in the world was farming and it was a way to maximize daylight. I grew up in rural western PA, so I've always wondered if that was really just an old wives tale. If this is the reason, why would we still do it today in an age where farming is no longer as dominant of an industry, or at least not farming as it was back then? What is the real reason? In simple terms please

I really don't know, but I know some states/cities do not fall back. Arizona comes to mind...now my friend who lives there will only be an hour behind me instead of two.

I am just happy to remember the old saying

spring forward - fall back - so I know which way to turn the clocks!!!

I live an hour and a half from Indianapolis - and they don't have DST - it is so hard when I take a flight from there to remember if we are on the same or different time as them - I always end up calling the airport the day before and asking - what time is it there!! My sister used to work and live in the two areas - so at home it was one time and at work it was another but only for 1/2 of the year!
