yesterday. The poor kid (11) came home really "out of sorts." I'm livid, because I don't believe in him being exposed to that intense coverage for that period of time. Am I overreacting, or should I say something to the teacher?

That is WRONG! He'd better not have it on today. Even I can't have it on, it is VERY unsettling to watch. :(

No, I'd have to agree with you.....it's up to you to decide how much you want your kids to be exposed to the news, not the teachers. They should just teach.

Call other parents and then call the school. This is so wrong.

I donlt think they would have allowed us to do that. School is not the appropriate time for this.

Complain - unless it was a social studies lesson which should have lasted 30 min. tops that is completely wrong. Parents should determine where and what coverage their kids watch.

I would call that school or go there now and find out if that is happening today. It is very unsettling to watch esp. for children. That teacher would be giving me some answers... there is no reason to have a class of 11yo sitting there watching TV all day. She/ He wanted to watch it and had them watching too. No common sense! The teacher should be doing her/his job. I'd be furious. I'm too mad just reading your post.

Call the principal right away and DEMAND that the tv be turned off. No child should be watching this horror without their parents.

Thanks for your support, I was (am) furious, but wanted to be sure I wasn't overreacting. I kind of felt like this was a sensitive subject that I should determine how much my 11 year old would have to deal with surounding this war. I'm really not one to completely shelter my children, they know all too well the harsh reality of war, we are very patriotic, my father died in Vietnam, my step-father served, my BIL was in Dessert Storm--I mean we deal with the reality of it, but I don't want to see my kids terrified of just day to day living.

The superintendent of our schools announced that no televisions were to be turned on in any classroom with the exception of high school current events classes. I don't agree with a lot of what our superintendent does, but this time I think he did the right thing.

I don't think that is right. I was in Wal-Mart earlier and they had tvs on throughout the store. I know that they thought they were doing a service for their customers, but I heard several employees say that it was too much to be around it all day. There is only so much we can all take.

OMG!!!!!!!!!

I hope that this issue was resolved before 1:00 Eastern time today! I had the TV on here & it was MOST unsettling. Absolutely unacceptable!

Jill - DS (22) came back from Wal-Mart at 1:30. He was really distressed because of the "saturation" over there. He grabbed his sandwich & went to his room because DH had it on downstairs.

Jill,

That's funny! I was at Walmart yesterday and heard some workers there say the same thing.

Maybe Walmart should rethink what they are doing.

All day...everyday....is too much. I can't imagine what the troops are going through.

I agree whole heartedly!

On Sept 11, 2001 my DD(8 and in 3rd grade at the time) had a substitute teacher. The sub left the TV on ALL DAY LONG. When my daughter came home and told me this I asked her if the teacher talked to them about the events at all and the answer was "no". So, she had approx 6 hours of unfiltered 9/11 events running around in her head. It was a few days before she was able to decompress enough to carry on with her life. It really affected her and caused her to have so many questions and fears that she wouldn't have had if the sub had not done that. Of course we planned to talk to her about it but all that media info as it was happening was very damaging to her.....she had a hard time feeling safe again. I called the next day and really laid into the principal. She informed me that there were 4 teachers at the school who did this and they had already been reprimanded quite strongly.

Please let us know how this was resolved, I'm very curious.

one of my professors had the tv on,but it was a journalism class for majors

He's 11 so it's not like he's 5 and won't understand what's happening. This is reality, and I applaud the teacher for showing it. Don't hide your kids from the truth, when they are at an age to understand it.

That is practically child abuse!!! These children had no choice, but were held as a captive audience to view something that many adults would not want to watch all day long. (Anyone who thinks that 11 is not a child is just plain wrong.....)

I would be outraged.

What the heck does this have to do with reading/writing/arithmetic.

Just thinking about this makes me angry. I would have to pull my son out of that class immediately if this were not stopped before class begins tomorrow.

My kids are home on spring break. I've had MSNBC on most of the last couple of days, but the kids have come and gone from the living room. They may be tired of it, but they don't have to sit in front of it either. Here at home we are also able to talk about what they see. I'm not sure I'd want my almost 12 year old to have it on all day at school without me around.

There is a difference between a parent being there and discussing the war as it is running and a teacher turning the set on in a classroom of an 11 year old. They are still children, why do we adults feel we have the right to cram things down there throats. our family had a health discussion about the war but that doesn't mean that they need to watch it all day...
