We are going on our first cruise in Jan. This will be my first vacation with an SLR. I had an advanced p&s before. I'm guessing i will want to have it with me most of the time with out dragging the whole camera bag (backback) with me. Any suggestions?? Ex: dinner - I would want to take pics of the food...but where is a safe place while we are eating? (or do i just starve to babysit the camera:rotfl2:)

I was just on an Alaskan cruise in August, and I brought my SLR with me everywhere on the ship, including dinner. I just hung the camera on my shoulder, diagonally across my chest for most of the night during dinner.

Maybe once or twice during the week, I placed the camera on the floor underneath my seat during dinner (everyone seemed really nice and non-threatening, so I took a chance...).

There are plenty of pictures to take during dinner: your table-mates, group shots of the table, your family at the table, the dinner itself, the desserts, the waiters providing entertainment, the huge dining room, the grand staircase in the dining room, etc.

For the rest of the trip, see if you can squeeze in a separate, smaller camera bag that you can take with you during the shore excursions. That way, you won't have to lug your camera backpack around.

Have fun! :)
