DSLR Lens suggestions?

I love having an extra lens or two with me but on our last trip realized that I rarely want to take the time to swap them and hate the extra weight. DH will carry the backpack with a spare lens and I have the camera tucked in my crossbody bag. Last trip I put on the 50mm on the second day and just left it on. Every so often I felt limited but it was rare. Mostly it just forced me to change how I was shooting and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I noticed my neck and shoulders felt much better from the reduced weight in my bag and that's worth something to me.

I don't think it's a Canon world at all. I see just as many Nikons when I go to a meet up of my photography group - especially now that the D500 has proven to be so great for action shots and is priced so affordably (relatively of course!). Are you loving it? It's probably my next upgrade but it won't be for a year or two.

I live in Canada and where I'm from, for every Nikon body I see, there are about 10 Canon bodies. Maybe something in the water. As for the D500, it's fantastic. My only "gripe" would be that I prefer the U1 and U2 settings on my D7100 which is lacking, to a degree, in the D500. You have to go into the menu settings to select a profile. I shoot video for the most part but also stills of course. It's nice to have a manual dial to select between the two processes. The D500 has that 10fps though, which is absolutely ridiculous when you use it. It doesn't even seem real but I love it.

I will say, though, as much as I love the D500, I wouldn't have purchased it had I not won a film grant. I likely would have kept to the D7100 which, as I learn more and more about cameras, is proving to be a work horse and one helluva camera.

I have a mirrorless but I am loving this thread! I got a mirrorless because it was so small and cheaper, but now I am wanting to accumulate more lenses which defeats the purpose! I have a 16-50 and 55-210, but I'm dying for a 35 or 50 1.8. 35mm more so, but it is $200 more than the 50mm so I might stick with that. Lenses are so expensive!

You know you'll eventually own both the 35mm and 50mm. :dogdance:

I hate when you have to give up a feature that you use a lot for an upgrade. I use the U1 and U2 features to switch between my favorite action and still life settings. When I went from the 5100 to the 7100 I had to give up the movable live-view screen which I still miss all the time. It saved a lot of wear and tear on my knees and back and was so handy for macro shooting!

Congrats on the film grant! Sounds like you are on your way up.

My favorite lens advice? The most expensive lens is one you have to buy twice.

That's funny. Every time I think of selling my Tokina 11-16 because I rarely use it I think maybe someday I'll want to do astro-photography or get into real estate shots for some side money.... and I put it away for another day.

That's funny. Because I actually did buy the Tokina 11-16 twice! At least I didn't lose money on the deal (since I sold it for near full retail back when they were in such short supply). Anyway, I had the Tokina, then sold it to try the Canon 10-22. Turns out I missed the 2.8 more than I valued the extra bit of reach so sold that and bought the Tokina again. I love that lens so much that I kept it even after going full frame. Turns out it works fine at 16mm, so I treat it like a wide angle prime.

LOL.

Off topic for this thread but I am finally!!!!! getting my long awaited real visit to DL. First time in 2014 we spent just one day during a 10 day CA SD to SF road trip and did not get to see or do nearly as much as I wanted. Second visit was booked for last April, just me and DD for 5 days, and I had to cancel the week before due to a work crisis. This trip (4/18 - 4/23) - just booked today so kind of last minute for us. It will be me, DD14, my nephew14 and my SIL. We're on a morning flight in and a red eye home on 4/23 so we'll have 5+ days and we'll 4 of them exploring DL. Can't wait! I will of course be bringing my gear and will be haunting you for tips on set up spots for fireworks and parades.
