DSi - warranty

I just bought a DSi for my DS7 bday, from Sams Club. Do I need the extended warranty. $39 for 3 years, I can still buy up to 30days from purchase.

Is it worth the extra money. He has had a leapster for the last 3 yrs and we have not had any problems with him dropping it or breaking it.

My DH is a mgr for an electronics retailer. He said the warranty is only worth the money if it covers "accidental damage".

Use Squaretrade and add the accidental drop and spills insurance. It will be cheaper (almost everytime) than the stores in-house warranty. You fax or mail them a copy of your receipt and thats it. They keep it on file so you don't have to worry about it wearing or losing it. You can also find coupon codes on the internet (I've been able to get up to 50% off the total of the purchase). Hope this helps.

**Plus a DSi is more fragile than a leapster do to its size and the screen can get scratched very easily. I've seen this on many DS and DSi from kids and adults getting into the games to much and using the pointer too hard.

I would definitely suggest a warranty with an accidental coverage for any child with a DS or DSi, especially if they've never had one of them before. I run a gaming club at my library and nearly every kid in it has a DS that has some problem (broken hinges, scratches, etc.) I almost NEVER recommend getting the warranty, but in this case I do.

Just make sure it covers accidents.

If I'm thinking what you're doing is actually upgrading your membership and that increases the warranty coverage to the 3 year point.

We did that when we bought our really good new lcd tv there, and it covered pixel damage.

I'd be shocked if it covers accidental damage. And if they tell you that it does, MAKE THEM SHOW IT TO YOU IN WRITING!!

A well-known electonics store (BB) has twice sold us warranties that were a joke. The first time the item was old and not repaired to our satisfaction, so no big deal. The second item was a PDA that the salesperson repeatedly told us if the screen was broken it would be fixed. If we dropped it and broke it, it would be fixed. WRONG! When this did occur, they wouldn't fix it since it was our fault. We have since learned from an employee that they are basically told to say whatever it takes to sell the warranties. I no longer shop there and I carefully evaluate before I purchase any warranty. Just my two cent warning to be careful when purchasing extended warranties.

I don't know if this helps, but my boys both have DS's that have been dropped and abused and we've never had any problems with them. The regular DS has been amazingly sturdy. Or we've been very lucky.

when you buy any nintendo system you get a 1 year warranty from Nintendo that covers manufacter defects...However few extended warranty's cover your kid dropping it either. That said the Ds and Dsi's are actually pretty sturdy!

Both DD's have nintendo ds lites.

I bought them the Nerf Armor (it feels like a nerf football). They've dropped the DS's a bunch of times and we've had no issues. We got ours at Fry's Electronics. Don't bother getting the thin shelled protectors, they're worthless according to friends.

Here's what it looks like:

Warranties, IMO, are a big pain in the butt trying to get satisfaction-there's always some small print that they'll pull out to explain why you're not going to get your electronics fixed. We never get warranties anymore, too many bad experiences.

This sure is a timely thread! My daughter's DS has a broken hinge. I don't think that it's from any specific damage that she has inflicted on the device but rather normal "wear and tear" (we have had more than one DS with a broken hinge). It was my understanding that this is what the warranty for a device such as this is supposed to cover (as opposed to accidental damage). Does anyone have any experience with this? In general, what exactly would be covered under such a warranty?

Its extremely easy you go online and file a claim with them......they give you a postage paid USPS shipping label and you ship it to them and they either fix it if they can or reimburse you (minus shipping cost) the full price you paid for the system. They never give you someone else's fixed items (they don't deal in refurbishments). The great thing is they also work with ebay to offer warranties on the products you purchase there.

My sweet, sensitive DS punched his ds screen and it was $50 sending it back to Nintendo to fix it. The things you learn...

We bought our DS at Toysrus and got the extended warrenty that covers accidents for $25. My 9 year old(8 when she got it) has never broke hers, but my 6 year olds has broke and been repaired TWICE. The leapster is much more sturdy than the ds. Ours cracked at the hinges the first time and then close to the same place, top screen the second. I didnt' have to pay anything for the two repairs.
