DS10 got "the talk" at school

Just before Thanksgiving break my son's school had a class on growing up and the birds and the bees. He mostly knew everything they talked about because we had discussed it already.

They passed out deodorant samples to all the boys and he was quite pleased with that. Now he wants to wear it everyday and has started showering in the morning before school. He's very fussy about his hair too. It has to be just so, and if you really want to get a rise out of him, just try to mess it up!

He's only in the 5th grade. Oh what ever will I do with him when he's in high school?!

My poor DS had to start with the deodorant & shower's everyday when he was 8.5!!! Yikes Can you imagine? Well, it had to be done... DD just turned 8, wonder if she'll hold off til 9?? No idea...

All I do know, is that they grow wayyy too fast

Well, DS13's response to "the talk" was "GROSS, PEOPLE DO THAT!!!!????" Then said, "you and dad had to do that TWICE?????". He was OH so not ready for that but he was in 5th grade and needed to know before they taught it in school. The shower and deodorant thing never caught on with him unfortunately. DS10 had the hygiene talk last spring and was into the deodorant and shower thing for a week or two and then stopped. He decided this week he needed some AXE spray for his gym locker though.

Well, for him, it will probably be when he is about 30 if he continues on at this maturity pace. The other two I am more worried about.

I remember having that talk in 5th grade. I guess it has changed a bunch over the years though. When I received it, the talk wasn't about the birds and the bees. The girls in one room, the boys in another, each were shown a video about our changing bodies. Everyone received deodorant and the girls got feminine products. I remember the boys being so curious as to what the girls got and why they didn't get any. And now they want nothing to do with them.

I taught 7th and 8 th grade science in a catholic school. part of the 8th grade book covered human biology, so we did this chapter the same time they were doing "family life" in religion class. WOW the things kids believe!!! One of the best was when we were covering pregnancy/conception (all in the science book!) I split the girls and boys one class and had a question answer time (which was frightening) the boys believed that Mountain Dew would keeo them lets say sterile- so they were all set on drinking as much MD as possible! I said while laughing you have got to be kidding me! one kid- "I've been drinking mountain dew for a year!!" All I can say is start talking early becuse the stuff they hear from older friends, on the bus or on TV or where ever is crazy!

When my DS got the talk they went into sperate rooms also and viewed a film. The girls got feminine products but the boys didn't get anything. My DS couldn't understand why his litlle friend who was a girl punched him when he asked her what was in her bag and why he didn't get a goody bag. I had to explain to him later what was in her bag. Boy was he surpised!

I had that talk with DS before the school did, so he was prepared when they had the talk with him. I had no choice, Clinton/Lewinsky were all over the news. He was soooo funny! It's a talk I'll ALWAYS remember, I'm sure he will too LOL

DD had the hygiene/mentruation talk at school last year-- she already knew most of everything. They have the birds and bees talk in 7th grade (she's know in 6th). A couple of months ago she said she didn't want to go into 7th grade. When I asked her why she said they have more of the talk and she just didn't want to know anymore.

Oh my goodness.....I just dread that day! My DS is 10 but in the 4th grade. I have one more year to wring my hands! My friend's husband told their son (Dad took Jr. on a "boys only" camping trip & had the "talk"). Jr.'s reaction was also "ewwe gross!" Wish that feeling would last till they were married & then something magical would happen & that feeling would disappear. Oh well, I can dream, can't I?

Oh, one more thing....Mountain Dew???

Oh yes, they grow up wayyyy to fast. DD11 has been using deodorant since the month she turned 6 and a half. And she needed it. She's 11 now & yesterday a 13 yo asked her to be his girlfriend. On no!!!

Mishetta--the dirt on Dew keeping you sterile has been going around since at least I was in middle school. Something about some wierd chemicals in MD that cause a man's um...well...his..er..the bits he doesn't use to urinate with..to shrink which supposedly will make you sterile.
