DS17 has applied early to 6 schools and received a phone call this evening from Ohio State that he has been accepted!!! They've offered him the honors program and he's a strong candidate for a big scholarship for out-of-state students. He's in the middle of finals right now, so this is definitely helping his state of mind.

OSU has called him (academic recruiting) a few times, but we never expected to get a phone call with the news! DH and I are both alumni (it's where we met) and we still have family in Ohio, so he'd have a "home" to escape to when needed (laundry, home-cooked meal, etc.).

OSU is his 2nd choice of colleges (Maryland is first), but he's so relieved to know he has somewhere to go that he really wants to go to! This is so exciting!!! We love the fact that it's not even December yet and he has an acceptance - it pays to apply early!

YAHOO! I love hearing about good kids! :cool1: :cheer2:  :thumbsup2

How sad are you, though? My baby brother is also a senior. I get weepy at the thought of him leaving in the fall

So bittersweet :guilty:

Wow, congratulations! My son is just applying now. I guess maybe we're a little behind.

Not if they're applying regular decision.
OP-congrats to your son. A friend of mine transferred there and loves it. :thumbsup2

::yes:: Yup! The Early Decision kids will be finding out where they will (or won't :guilty: ) be going within the next 3 weeks :cheer2:

That's wonderful news!!! You must be so proud!!!

Very good news, and wonderful to hear around the holidays!

Congrats to him.

Way to go!!!! It's so exciting when they start to hear, isn't it????

DD is a freshman this year, but I remember the drama of last year like it was yesterday. It's a wonderful feeling to get all those applications done, then it's nerve-wracking waiting to hear, and there are always some ups and downs along the way. But they almost always end up with a great situation!!!!

Can't wait to read more about this year's class of seniors!!!!

Wow congratulations! Ohio State has become a very competitve school, and even difficult for in-state kids to get into...you should be very proud. :thumbsup2

Awesome. That's really cool. I applied early as well. Of course it was only to a community college, but it was for a very popular community college that a lot of people from my high school went too. Anyways, I applied and got a letter that same week saying I was accepted. Still pretty exciting.

Wish I could hear good news like this about my brother. He's 18 and a senior. Hasn't applied to any colleges and honestly probably won't. :(

That is great news, Bearvet, congrats to you and your son!!! I am starting to watch the mail...DD applied to one school early action. Should be an exciting month, as I know we have other DIS parents and teens waiting for letters. Good Luck everyone! :)

Thanks for all of your good wishes!! We're definitely a happy household tonight! It is bittersweet however, I'm so happy for DS and yet I know how much I'm going to miss him (the Lowe's commercial already had me in tears a year early!). We have DS13 abd DS11 still at home so it's not quite an empty nest, but I'm very close with DS17 - we're very lucky!

DS has been very motivated in the college search process - we began visits in March. He heard many times about the benefits of applying early (called Early Action or Priority) but not Early Decision which is binding. OSU is "Rolling" admission, so they take them as they get them. I use some college discussion forums and haven't heard of any other acceptances yet to Ohio State though. DS already called his uncle in Cincinnati who is lobbying for him to go to school in Ohio! He may still apply to 1 school regular decision, which is due Jan. 1 - he's still wavering on that one.

DS is planning to major in Computer Science and Engineering - he's very strong in math and science and managed to get a pretty decent SAT score. Of course, that's always subject to change, but he seems pretty set on it for now. He figures it's better to start off in a tough major (engineering) and switch to something else rather than the other way around.

He's also applying for a scholarship through NSA (National Security Administration) which would cover all expenses for all 4 years and it's something he's very interested in. I don't think he'll get it, but it doesn't hurt to apply - we'll keep our fingers crossed.

Thanks again for the congrats and GO BUCKS!!!

I got a call that I had been accepted into my first choice school.
My dad thought it was a joke since it was so out of the ordinary and had me call the admissions counselor who informed me that yes I was accepted but I had been called the wrong week and should have been called the week after I got my letter.
In all honesty I thought the phone call was SO much more exciting lol
Congrats to your son!

Thats awesome! I was in your shoes at this time last Fall, boy do I know how you feel. My son got accepted right before Christmas (he's out in your area in the Berkshires, loves it) and it was such a great time knowing where he was going so early. Enjoy it! :thumbsup2

Congrats. The Honors program at OSU is very nice. I hope that he will go to Ohio State and take a Honors visit. My DS has a very good friend in the Honors program and she is very happy. While you are there, visit the engineering department, we thought very highly of it.

My DS almost picked OSU and would have been very happy there. Go Bucks!

Congrats to your DS.

I have a DD junior and DS freshman at University of Maryland. They both applied before the early decision date of December 1 and didn't hear back until ~ February 15. DS is in the Honors program. I understand they have a good engineering program too.

PM me if you have any UMD questions.

Congratulations to your son! It's always nice to have "one in the bag". We went through all of this last year with DD, and she's now very happy at CU-Boulder.
