My DS (18) has been meeting with a Navy recruiter and will be taking the ASVAB (not sure if the acronym is correct) within the next couple of weeks.

To make a very long story short he is a good/smart/likeable kid who is "limping" thru highschool and making very bad choices - most definitely needs to get out of this very small town that we live in. My husband and I think that this is a very good choice for him and that he has the potetial to succeed. He did take a prelim. ASVAB and scored very high.

Any advice or encouragement would be greatly appreciated.

****** 1/31 update: good news: ASVAB test is scheduled for 2/9 in Boston.....bad news: got notice from the school that DS may not graduate.....have calls in waiting for call back from guadance to set up a meeting.....DS very discouraged......please keepus in your thoughts.

I am sure that he will do well especially if he has already taken a practice one. If he joins the Navy he will definately get out of your small town. I have friends in the Navy, submarines to be exact, and they love it.

Just tell him to relax and to not stress about it and he will do fine. What rate (job) is he looking at going into, if you don't mind my asking?

I want to thank you for encouraging and supporting his decision to join the military.

Both his father and I support the decision - DS is hoping to get into engineering or intellligence - has even mentioned SEALS!! I truely believe that this is the best thing for him - the adventure he seeks but yet in a "controlled" environment - I think some kids just need to get away to reach their full potential.

Another plus - both grandfathers are Navy veterans - WW2 and Korea - can't tell you how proud they are!!

Be very proud of your DS. Military is great for young men and women. My DS was a very young Dad and husband living in a very small town working in deadend jobs. He joined the U.S. Army 6 years ago and is now working in intellegence. My DDIL, his wife, just joined Army and will start training in Arizona for intelligence job next week. I am so very proud of both.

This has been the best thing for their family. Education, travel and health care are only a few of the benefits. Even if he does not reup when his tour is over he will have memories that will last a lifetime.

Good Luck to your son. I am sure he will do just fine on his test.

Thanks for the kind words - his recruiter is coming to our home again next monday to set up his test dates - etc. Our goal now is to keep him in motivated to graduate and move forward to a better future.
