DS having trouble sleeping

DS is 14. For the past week or so he has been having trouble staying asleep. I'm not sure what his problem is. He is usually an early riser (6:30, 7:00). DH has been away for a week and I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it. 2 nights ago he woke up at midnight and woke me up saying he'd been awake for 45 minutes and couldn't get back to sleep. He wanted to sleep with me. I was so tired - I let him. Last night I gave him some Benadryl to relax him and told him to take a warm shower. He slept until 4:45 am. I told him to try to go back to sleep. But that woke up the dog and cat who then wanted me to get up and feed them. I ended up getting up at 5:00.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Something is bugging him. You will have to do some investigation mom....Could be dad, could be a project that is due for school or something else.

Dh was away last week (which is rare in our house), my DD slept in bed w/ me 2 of the 3 nights (also rare), so I would chalk it up to that....

Otherwise, my friends DS was having major sleep problems, turns out he was having some anxiety at school, she called his teacher to find out what was going on (he's a very shy boy)....

He starts mid-terms on Wednesday. I hope it's that. He's been doing very well this year (first year of high school). Which is unusual - he usually has at least 1 class he has problems with but he made honor roll first marking period. Hopefully it's just mid-term stress.

Is he ready for a growth spurt? My kids always from birth didn't sleep well right before a growth spurt. Does he need to go burn of some physical energy from the Mid term stress? You know even though it is cold go take an hour bike ride or run or something helps with the stress/nerves and makes them physically tired.
